Lags so badly I’m about to give up

I have an iPad Pro (3rd Gen). iPad software is up to date. My memory is 512 GB and have only used 29 GB. 7.2 GB for Affinity Designer (1), and Photo 2.1 GB. I use an external HD as backup but now wondering if I should use it primarily.
 

In other words, I shouldn’t be so frustrated with the CONSTANT lagging and locking. The locking is getting worse. My project is only 231.5 MB at this point but will be massively bigger. It will be like have about ten pictures in one. 

What is going on? What am I doing wrong? I’ve even organized the layers as you will see in picture. 

How do I make Affinity the program I should be using? I’m starting to think it can’t handle more than a simple picture. Please help. I don’t want to give up and switch to Adobe.

I have iPad Pro v.3 with 256G and about 130G free, but do not use an External Storage (mainly Cloud for Archive/Saves etc), and occasionally get the same.
I am able to for the most part work without substantial issues, but have sporadically cropped up depending on what I’m working on.

Also tends to ‘heat up’ my iPad a lot more than V1 ever did, which was rarely ever…even when working on intensive processes (even transferring between Apps, with multiple ones open simultaneously).

Hoping that they will soon issue an Update for V2…since they’ve already had 2 Updates for V1…..that might fix some the processing lag that does occur.

I don’t have Affinity 2. Doesn’t seem like I’m going to be getting any help. Which means Adobe. Thank you so much for responding. My iPad doesn’t get hot. Designer it would seem, just sucks.

An iPad is a battery powered device, designed for occasionally connecting an external drive - which it must power from the internal iPad battery. For this reason alone I would not use external storage as working area, for one external drives, even SSD are much much slower than internal memory access, second reason is iPad batteries are not easily replaced, so take care of it by not overloading it.

I don’t use the hd while drawing. I make a copy of what I’ve done to the hd after drawing. It’s just a backup. I’m sorry if I wrote poorly. Thank you for the response.

If you have Photo installed you can run the benchmark under preferences to see how your iPad compares to others. You do occasionally close all open apps and do Forced Restarts now and again don’t you, just to keep the iPad performing normally. I do that at least once a week.

I’m old and don’t know what I’m doing lol. I did a forced restart of the iPad awhile ago and pulled up my project, and after tapping a layer it froze. 

Are you saying have all the apps opened and than do a forced restart?

Here is what I’m working on. The file is bigger than it looks. One of the rocks above what will be the snakes eye is actually a window to the Grand Canyon with the Snake River running through. Well, here it is. 
 

is it possible my project is corrupted and how do I fix that?

No normally you close all open apps, wait then do a Forced Restart as per the FAQ section or google instructions from Apple web site. It is easy though. The Forced Restart just ensures the iPad’s peripherals are initialised correctly, they can mis-behave now and again which could result in poor performance.

I may have underestimated how complex your image is, if it was pixel image 231MB would be ginormous, a vector drawing is far more efficient on memory so to be 231MB of vectors the complexity of your images is therefore perhaps very very high? which could mean many many thousands of re-calculations have to be done at every step you take.  Is it just an experiment for a video as 99% of the fine detail will be so small as not to be visible to the naked eye BUT still have to be re-calculated perhaps?.

how’s this for an idea? Spend ten hours slowly grabbing portions of the file and saving them and working only in those areas. Once I’m done I can put the finished part in my original project in my hd so that when I’m done it’s there, altogether. 
 

and btw, I will be using Lumafusion to make an animation with it. I’m also going to be narrating. So yes. Big project.

Ok then yes a did the hard restart properly. Click vol high release. Vol low release. Power button until restart.

Well I guess Affinity doesn’t want to help me. No response from them. I thank users who were kind enough to respond. Adobe it is I guess. I know they have great support. What a disappointment.

Have you tried the V2.0.3 public beta to see if there is any improvement there?

If Affinity doesn’t care enough to respond to my problem, then why bother?  People are having the same problem with 2 according to the internet. You are the ONLY person who actually tried to help and I am grateful.

Thanks Keith, I have messaged you but I will put key points from my point of view in case any one reads this.

The design takes at least 3.2GB of RAM when loaded so you would benefit from closing all other apps that might be using RAM on your iPad. 

Design is very very complex with many nested groups, so see if you can reduce the complexity by possibly rasterising certain parts of the design that don’t need to be vectors.

I sent you a recording of how to name parts of your design and also how you might identify some of your highly complex vector layers which may benefit from being simplified by being rasterised. I would save externally at every step in case you rasterised something that you later need to modify.

Still hopeful a developer will pop along soon to take a look at your design, it certainly is not corrupt, just very large.

I took time off. I just started. I’ve pixels the sketch. Now going for others. I’m still confused about renaming layers. I click on the name and I get nothing. I don’t have a keyboard so I need it to give me a prompt. How please?
