BUG? ISSUE? INTENDE|D? Unable to select layers / objects when behind some text but clicking nowhere near the text.

Recommended Posts

Is this a Bug? Issue? or Working as Intended?

I have some text above a layer which is a black box essentially with an opacity. Now when I am in selection tool (short cut v), and try to select the background which is a good size bigger than the text (say 40 to 60 pixels on each side more than the text), I keep getting the text tool activated and then find myself accidentally editing the text.

I then have to zoom out click outside far away from the text to get out of text editing mode and then press V again to get back to selection mode to get things back to normal.

Press the Esc key instead, and you'll be out right away. Then press V again.

To me it seems to be a bug, see my post that @MikeTO has linked to.

That said, the standard Affinity shortcut to select background objects always was Option-click/Alt-click.
Just use that, and it will work.

The solution to this is that Affinity make "hit boxes" (the areas clickable) that more accurately merely encompass the characters in a text object rather than the bounds of the container for the text. It's something that only a company that uses its own products would realise is a worthwhile endeavour, since text is ofter the top most object but the least likely to need to be selected for most general and common editing tasks.

And let's not even get started on how clunky the locking mechanisms are. Or the lack of selection sets... etc.

But I do think it's bit of a bug

The fact that body height now defines the click zone and not the bounding box is possibly a bug. But let's wait for Serif staff to comment on that in either of these recent threads.

The issue "Layer order affects object selection" (REF: AFP-5621) has been fixed by the developers in internal build "2.2.0.1900".
This fix should soon be available as a customer beta and is planned for inclusion in the next customer release.
Customer beta builds are announced here and you can participate by following these instructions.
If you still experience this problem once you are using that build version (or later) please reply to this thread including @Serif Info Bot to notify us.
