AD V1 files migrated/saved in AD V2 still only open in V1

Recommended Posts

So…with all of the hubbub about having to rename and re-save V1 files so they can be opened in V2…

I did so with a few, then suddenly noticed… my Affinity Designer Folder that installed has the AD V1 icon on it.

All others… AP and APub folders… have the new V2 icons on them…but the AD folder remains V1 icon on the folder.
There is no V1 and V2 folder…just 1 folder with the V1 logo.

‘If I opened an AD V1 file to move/export and save for transfer to be opened up in AD 2….it still regardless opened in AD 1 saying it couldn’t be opened.

‘No matter if I opened the file in V2….Saved as, Renamed, located the AD folder and saved it there…it always opens it in the AD v1 NOT V2 App.

Completely deleted V1. Opened files via AD V2…Saved As- renamed file..selected the newly created AD created folder. Opening files would successfully open in V2.

‘Reinstalled AD V1 to retain a useful copy just in case. Now all the recreated files opt to open in V1 again!????

Update (7:31pm):  Now Files only open in AD V2 if I completely delete/remove V1 from my iPad.

Meaning, apparently I cannot have both purchased copies anymore…although, I can apparently have both V1 and V2 of Phot and Publisher as they have no issues.

Update 2 (7:58pm):  Apparently…opening the AD files within the AD V2 App via Document Dialogue Box > Open …works, and opens in V2Files.
Attempting to open same documents via Files Folder….opens incorrectly, opening via AD V1.

Files opened from one location will update back to that location. ie if you navigate to a V1 Affinity folder to open a file, edits to the file will save back to that folder.

To create a V2 folder, open V2 and use new to create a new file. Now save the new file. This creates a folder. You can copy/move the content of V1 folder to V2 and open from there. They will now save back to your V2 folder.

Yes you can have both versions installed. If you copy the V1 files to the V2 folder then you can open V1 files in V1 and V1/V2 in V2.

Note files opened in V2 by navigating to v1 folder will be saved back in v1 folder but will be in v2 format i.e you won’t be able to open it using v1 app. So if you want the option to use both app versions, remember to keep the saves seperate.🙂

So after I deleted AD V1 and V2 completely to start from scratch…..Opened V2 > created a New File…Saved …it created a new folder with AD V2 Logo.

Opened each other file and did a Save As…to rename and save it in that new folder (which they did)….then reinstalled AD V1 (did not open or use) …opened a .afdesign file from that new folder…it should have opened it in V2. Yet it opened it back in V1…and the folder icon reverted to V1 Logo.?        Ok.

Affinity's themselves say that v2 files won't open in v1. So they can't have been V2 files.🤔

Deleted both apps.

Reinstalled AD V2.

Opened AD V2…selected New > created a new file. Once opened selected Export > Renamed file > Save….was saved to a new AD V2 Folder.

Within AD V2….Selected Open > browsed for file folder of old saved AD V1 files > select file…opens in AD V2…Export > Rename/Save…saves to new folder.

Continue process, until all other (@24 files) are newly exported/saved from V2 to that folder. Test files…which of course open in only  version of AD on my iPad (V2).

Reinstall AD V1….AD V2 folder with icon remain. Go to Files > AD V2 folder > select what should be a V2 file……it opens in AD V1 but fails to open being a V2 file. Will not open in AD V2.

Same issue.

Tried multiple times now from scratch all over again with Affinity Designer V2. Did not have this issue at all with Photo/Publisher V2.

Tried creating  brand New Document in V2….then manually transferring files from V1. Tried another time by Opening from V2…save/save as/export….Same issue.
Tried to simply Drag and Drop to V2, then open in in V2, then Save to new V2 folder.

If I reinstall V1 to keep the original App I paid for alongside……..all files. Still. Only. Open. In V1….with the added issue of if trying to open and save one of those files as a V2 file…crashes the App completely.

Tried Hard Resets numerous times. Not sure what I have done differently than what I did with APhoto, which had ten times more saved V1 files but works fine.

Guess I’ll have to try to open each file… to copy and paste Layers into a newly created V2 document now??!

Deleted AD V2….Installed, Opened Affinity Designer V2.

Opened a New Document File…made a red Square. Saved into the new AD folder created.

From V2…viewing the Live Doc…. Selected Open to open a file from V1 saved in an Untitled Files Folder.

After opening the file in V2…..Selected all of the Layers inside…..Copied All Layers.

Opened a Brand New Document of same Size.
Pasted the Layers into the new document. Saved File into the new AD V2 folder.

Clicked the document in Files to open it……….which should be a completely new AD V2 document……it opens in…yep, opens in AD V1.

Im now beyond flabbergasted.

V2…Export > Rename/Save…saves to new folder.

Export does not save as .afphoto file. It will be jpg, svg, pdf etc which of course will open in either version. The only way to Save is to tap Save. With the latest update the only way to save V2 .afxxx file is from Home Screen 3 bar menu. Hopefully this will be removed in next update and placed instead in Worksheet Document Menu (where it belongs).🙂

Appreciate it but apparently that is all you have read/thought I have done. I have opened and SAVED files….opened and SAVED AS files…initially opening a new file after installation with nothing but a red rectangle in it, then SAVED to the folder….opened a file and Exported just to begin a folder to SAVE in….and lastly, most importantly…after reinstalling V2 opened a V1 file in V2 and copied the layers inside to paste them in a new document and SAVE that one into the new V2 file.…AND that one will even open in AD V1.  Not even mentioning deleting Apps and starting from scratch with the same outcome.

Yet after doing the very same initial thing that I did with APhoto….Phot files open perfectly as expected.

And all of this after the 3 Affinity apps were updated. 👌

LOL, yeah I did get a little zoned- sorry. Now it looks like V2 files will also open in V1. ( Just tried with Photo and no problem). I do wish Affinity developers would communicate changes that they make.

Other little surprises: no more Save/Save a Copy in Document menu , a new delete bin (swipe on the x icon), new Save functionality on Home Screen.

What’s funny is…this feels like a Video Game that’s been rushed to release too early, with the expectation of releasing update fixes while player’s suffer, instead of releasing what a finished AAA Game should be.🤦

Can open all files just fine within AD V2, just can’t if I’m in Files saved folders. (Which I tend to be frequently, what with Archiving and such.

Basically, it’s like the AD File folder gets completely overwritten by V1…no matter what. In the Files folder, APhoto/APub V2 are each there with V2 Logo Icons…but no matter how/what/when/why, there are sometimes just one but 2 ADesign V1 Icon File folders created. No V2 Icon Folder….unless I start fro scratch and install V2 only.

This is an iPadOS file extension problem, there was never any need to do all those load and saving steps.

IOS/iPadOS handles file extensions in a weird way, if you create and use the Open in Designer V2 shortcut only once using the share interface from the files app, then iPadOS remembers that the V2 app is being used.

From then on they will open directly from the files app without the shortcut until the next time an Open in V1 app shortcut is used when you need to use it again to alter the file extension associations.

Mad isn’t it, nothing to do with Serif though !

Obviously replace Designer here by Photo or Publisher as needed.

Great explanation.
So when my AD V2 File Folder (with V2 icon) automatically reverts to an AD V1 icon file folder doing all of this…..and have not used the Share feature at all, but simply Opened from Files Folder later…….how and what am I supposed to do to fix this, so that it behave normally ….like APhoto which didn’t even remotely do this….exactly??  (not even mentioning where the Graphic above came from)

Not use my Files Folders at all ever again….only the App??

Exactly, I stopped using the Affinity folders several years ago, the icon’s being wrong are a none problem, as they are not needed.

Make your own folder structures in iCloud and archive your work using your own personal preferences. I pickup my iPad work using Finder on my Mac’s and vice versa.

I expect the Affinity folders to no longer be created in future version.

What you fail to understand…or explain how to fix…is that I have created my own Folder to put these Files into, have opened them in AD V2 to Save them into that folder…after creating a Brand New document to do so…and they STILL only open in AD V1 (yet fail to open because made in V2).

Using iCloud vs. Locally is your fix?? And what if I don’t want to use iCloud this way?

Familiar. Just have no need or use them….other than what is apparently already inherent in Opening and Saving Documents.

Update: This! This! This! This is the solution to the mystery!

My God….Thank You, Paul Mudditt! Brilliant…..absolutely Brilliant!

In Files, select saved document > Select Share > select App to Open in > After document opens in AD V2 > Save ….Now Opens consistently In AD V2!!!

I found that the file association problem can be corrected by using them once.

From the files app, select your problem file with a long press then use share and then browse to the shortcut you make. Once you have done this once, your file association problem will be fixed.

Here I create the shortcut you need from the beginning.

Everything solved….although the nice little AD V2 icon is no more, will suffer it just to finally know how how to correct even if it occurs again!

Brilliant! Thanks again, Paul Mudditt! I can now go back to regularly scheduled programming …well, not programming  per se but creating with one less issue….now onto the other ones.

Do me a favour and go the the other FAQ post I linked and like it and add a comment there. I am finding it really hard to get the message out even to the Serif guys that this is the solution.
