Hi, I'm sorry if this is a daft question, but I have just downloaded my affinity and publisher onto an iMac,  and on my account there were also some font downloads which are now sitting in my downloads folder and I am not sure how to get them added in, I presume to publisher. I have tried to check in the FAQ's but I am struggling to find the answer, I am very new to how this works. I thought they may have automatically updated, but it does not seem so.

Would appreciate any advice please.  Many thanks in advance, regards Sue

Welcome to the forums @sue b

If the files are ZIP archive files (e.g. <filename>.zip) then you will need to unzip the archive to see the individual font files.

Search the web for macOS ZIP to find out how to unzip archive files and search macOS install font to see how to install the fonts.

Hi @sue b,
welcome to the Affinity forums!

I am surprised that you assume a font would get installed per application. Fonts are rather a matter of the operating system. In macOS you can double-click a font file … see also:

Thank you very much everyone, having looked at the link, I can see that I incorrectly assumed these would download, mainly because on the Affinity website it says downloads will happen automatically, I now realise the fonts are a separate item.

Appreciate you all taking the trouble to help, I think I understand better now.

It is not so uncommon, and might also be the user's preference to have a separate installation if they do not want to populate their system with fonts they do not know yet (or if they want to test the fonts just within the app that included them to be able to easily see what they got).

Adobe apps have specific locations where they search per-app (and app session) installable fonts so that they do not need to be installed on the system and for general use. VectorStyler lets the user specify app-specific fonts

But these get installed by the app-installer & during the app installation process (either inside the app-package or in a 'hidden' system folder), – correct?
<–> Whereas the OP mentioned "on my account there were also some font downloads" which, to me, sounds rather like an optional / additional offer then like part of the app installation or possible app requirements.

By the way I had issues for quite a while with some fonts auto-installed by Microsoft Office in Library/Fonts/Microsoft (not user/Library/…). Not being conscious of their fonts I run into 'conflict' error messages from my custom Extensis Suitcase font manager. For no reason Microsoft had installed various fonts which are part of macOS anyway.

Which fonts were they?
Some of the macOS fonts (with the same names) have been damaged so they do not work properly in Windows applications - and that includes Microsoft Office on macOS. So Microsoft may have been providing working fonts to Office.
If you can tell me the font family names I can check.

@LibreTraining, thank you for the offer! Luckily since a few years either a macOS upgrade or myself could manage to prevent the conflicting duplicates from causing problems. So currently I don't need to replace or fix any font file. Just fyi: the most frequent issues were caused by Arial, while this Microsoft fonts folder contains 155 files (none as family, means each file one weight), all with the same creation date 2015-Apr-06, 9:00 h.

Interesting. MacOS installs the Arial fonts as part of Supplemental Fonts.
Many, but not all the same, are also installed with MS Office for the Mac.
There would definitely be some conflicts to have both installed.
They (MS) may be attempting to not install any fonts if they are already installed in the OS, like the cloud fonts do.
But that is not the Mac M365 cloud fonts folder.
I think MS Office uses that folder to make the fonts only available to MS Office.
Odd that there are no TTC files (which I assume you mean by "none is family").
Office for Mac includes 13 TTC font files.
Would be curious to see a list of the font files in that folder. Quite odd.

What version of MS Office for Mac do you have installed?

– No 365, it's "Office for Mac 2011".
– Yes, the dups were causing issues. As far I remember I had moved some of them manually to the "Fonts disabled" folder (same parent directory) but MS appeared to move them back.
– Attached the file name list of "Library/Fonts/Microsoft". It seems the OT versions don't have a .suffix
– Plus three screenshot examples (double-click to enlarge) from Suitcase Fusion: Oddly, though it is set to be sorted by "Path" some MS fonts aren't sorted together with their others (e.g. some Arial or Gill).

However, don't forget its both an old macOS and MS Office and thus rather not worth the effort to investigate possible conflicts, respectively conflicts which used to happen but don't any more.

Thank you very much for this.
I have a harder time getting a hold of Mac fonts, especially older ones.
The list and the images will go in a new folder: Microsoft.Office.2011.for.Mac
Currently I only have: Microsoft.Office.2016.for.Mac, and Microsoft.Office.2019.for.Mac.
And those fonts are quite a bit different than the ones you have listed there.

Interesting to see some of the differences.
The Gill Sans fonts are almost all in one TTC - all separate files now (even in Office 2007 and 2010 for Windows).
Lots of actual old format TrueType files - all are OpenType-TT now.

The typographic families are separated the same way as the style groups (for the most part).
In some of the families from Apple of some of the same fonts, they have them all in one typographic family.
That is another way you may see some conflicts.
Because of the way Apple does this non-standard stuff with their we-do-not-give-a-crap-about-cross-platform-compatibility attitude, it is a bit of a minefield for Microsoft Office for Mac to try and have their documents/fonts be cross-platform compatible.

Thanks for the info. 😎
