Affinity Designer crashes when creating new document / open existing file

Recommended Posts

Affinity Designer crashes when creating a new document or opening an existing file.

The app starts fine and won't crash until opening an existing file or trying to create a new document.

- Windows 11 Pro - 22H2 - build 25163.1010
- Affinity Designer 1.10.5.1342

Already tried these steps:

- Uninstall Affinity Designer
- Delete the folder C:\Users\xyz\AppData\Roaming\Affinity
- Download latest installer and Install again

Also tried to change the renderer under Preferences  > Performance from "Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti" to "WARP", but no success.

None of the software listed in this thread is installed.

Hi @ngpixel

Please check that your Windows and the GPU drivers are up-to-date.

Try the Microsoft .NET repair tool https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30135

Try SFC to make a system file check. To do so press Windows key + R. Type CMD. Hold SHIFT + CTRL and click OK. Type sfc /scannow and hit Enter.

Or use the little tool DISM-Gui. Download and more infos about that tool here (sorry, infos only in german):

Hi @ngpixel,

Welcome to the Affinity Forums :)

As Komatös suggests, this is likely due to your current GPU drivers. Please download the latest drivers directly from Nvidias website, then install these and restart your PC.

Now try loading your image/document in Affinity once again, does this resolve the crashing for you please?

Many thanks in advance!

Hi @YoshiAsk,

Welcome to the Affinity Forums :)

Sorry to hear you're having trouble! I'd like to try resetting your Affinity app back to default settings as the change in GPU may be confusing the app on launch.

You can reset your app back to its default settings by holding down the CTRL key while launching the app. When the Clear User Data window appears, click Select All and then Clear. The app will now open.

Be aware that resetting your app back to its default settings will lose any custom settings such as keyboard shortcuts and brushes etc. To backup such settings before resetting the app, please watch our Affinity Backing up app resources and factory reset video here -

Once reset, does the app open correctly please?

Had the same issue today (late 2023). Opening Affinity Designer worked fine, but opening a document or creating a new one simply closes the software.
Tried resetting, as Dan C above suggested - didn't help.
Tried reinstalling (including a complete uninstall, restart, install, restart) - didn't help.

SOLUTION: Then tried Kamatös's approach of updating the GPU driver - WORKED 😄 (running a RTX 2060 super; driver from 08/2023 was installed and caused the problems, driver from 10/2023 works fine now).

Thx a lot!
