I’m using affinity Photo on a Wacom cintiq companion 1.
I’ve not imported any brushes, just using those supplied with Photo but I can’t get an ‘airbrushed’ effect. ….whenever I use the paintbrush the edges of the brushstroke are solid and I want the edges to merge into the background. Do I need to import an airbrush brush or is there something I need to do in Photo

Have you tried brushes from the Sprays & Spatters category in the Brushes panel? Or possibly Acrylics?

You should be able to adjust the Hardness | Flow | Opacity on the context toolbar to create an airbrush effect.
If you cannot then it is another issue!

If you want the keep the settings:
Select the brush you require DD Click on Brush in Panel and Duplicate the brush to create a new one!.. Then edit the changes in the slider menu

Hint: There are lots of free stuff in resources

Interesting just opened Photoshop 7 on my Wacom and I get really soft airbrush effect which I can’t get with any of the brushes in APhoto. My Wacom is using Windows10 pro

I think it’s something to do with the settings in ‘MORE’ ‘GENERAL’ which I don’t understand….is there somewhere that explains these settings

Have a look here for an overall explanation of brushes

Yes the adjustments found under the More Button allow you to create brushes that are only limited by your imagination. In the More dialog, there's General, Dynamics, Texture, and Sub Brushes. Explore the Dynamics, Texture, and Sub Brushes to really get a look your wanting.

The Spray & Spatter Brushes have 7 brush presets that are Airbrushes. You can start with one of them and change some of the settings found in the other tabs. What I found is the Finest Spray Rade brush gives a soft airbrush to start with. Maybe change the X and Y Scatter in the Dynamics panel to make the spray wider or narrower. Change the Accumulation, which is like Opacity, or Hardness. You can change the how the each of the settings are applied Dynamically by Pressure or Random or several other possibilities.

Have a look at the Affinity Photo Online Help for Modifying Brushes for an explanation.
