Cannot open IDML file

Hi, I'm trying to open this file and every single time I try Publisher crashes. I have opened other .idml files.. what's wrong? (because I had issues with Affinity photo crashing, I have disabled 'metal procesing' and changed the display to opengl basic, but did not affect the crash). Help! I bought the program specifically to be able to open IDML files...

Thanks

That file opens in APub 1.92, Windows version.

So someone with a current version, preferably the Mac version, needs to try to see if there is something amiss with either the Mac application, the current version, or your system.

Would you be so kind to save the file as an Affinity Publisher file and upload it here? To see if I can work on it while we figure this out… I would really appreciate it!

Sure thing. I'll get to it fairly soon.

Haha Thanks so much! And Merry Christmas :)  I am now able to open the file but there seems to be a problem with the links as the resource manager shows there are missing files, but doesn't let me relocate them since they are named "?" and not the photo names. Do you by any chance know why this might be?

Anyway, thanks so much for your time, especially at this time of the year! I'll just wait for the Affinity team to come back...

All the best!

That's odd indeed. Appears as a buggy idml interpreation.

As a workaround you could find them via the ID resource paths, APub at least seems to be aware of the resource file names, although it doesn't tell them in the Resource Manager.

If you don't have access to ID you alternatively could search for resource paths in the .idml file opened with a text editor, for instance BBEdit.app:

Thank you very much for the info! I Tried to tweak things a bit but it's too complicated and I'm afraid to break things up too much, I have to export this back to In design afterwards... I will try to open it in a previous version of indesign and export it again to see if it works with afpub..

Unless the images/resources are copied back to your hard drive into the folder with the idml, saving from any version of ID to idml will likely fail in the same manner.

ID CS6 sees the dropbox path, as does Viva Designer and QXP.

You might be able to specifically connect to that dropbox path via your browser and have APub then see the images. Doubt it, but one never knows.

What do you mean:

There is no facility for APub to export to idml (or any other exchange format). So if you are needing to exchange or deliver and idml when done, you  need to either use ID or Viva Designer (though I would recommend using ID).

This is very unfortunate! I had no idea, I just assumed that because it could read the files, it could also export them back to the same format... I live in Argentina with exorbitant exchange rates for USD so an Adobe subscription to ID is absolutely out of question, and because I'm using Catalina, the CS6 version doesn't work with my computer anymore... I do have it in another computer that's very slow but I will have to resort to that for the time being... Thanks!
