I am making adjustments to both the canvas and the document for my project. When I go into the menu to check the settings of each variable, they are always the same despite my canvas having been adjusted as larger than the image. How can I have relative border consistency and gage further adjustments if I can't see the value attributions of each variable?

I keep going into the documents menu to check and "resize document" and "resize canvas" both read whatever I made as the last modification to one or the other. They should read independent of one another with different measurements if the canvas is a fill/border. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

My understanding is  that resize document resizes everything and resize canvas just the canvas. Again my understanding is that if you resize the canvas that then becomes the document size.

In simple terms...

If you have an image and select resize document the image will resize accordingly

If you select resize canvas the canvas/document will resize but the image will remain the same size as before. You will effectively have a border around your image (assuming you resized the canvas larger)

To see the original size of the document (after doing a resize canvas), just use the Move Tool and select the image in the Layers panel. The original Width and Height (of the image/document) will then be displayed in the Transform Panel.

Thank you, but this does not answer my question. I understand how resizing the canvas and document work and I am not attempting to see the original width and height. I am making ongoing adjustments for a larger project and make continuous amendments. If I resize the canvas or document, it should not synchronize with the other value. They are two separate elements and should read as such. If anyone could help here, I'd appreciate it as I have a deadline looming and this is holding up the whole thing. There may be something really basic I'm missing here- if there's something obvious I'm overlooking, please point it out, thanks.

If you resize the document, the canvas size becomes the same as the new document size. If you resize the canvas to make it larger, your choice of anchor will determine where the additional space is added but the document size will again become the same as the new canvas size.
