Help with coloring specific region

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I’m looking for some help with the photo I attached. I’m trying to color the white lid (while keeping its turning values) and make it match the teal color of the peacock background feathers. I’ve tried the HSL adjustment layer but it doesn’t give me the ability to pick the color from the photo itself. With the color picker I selected the color I want and also looked at its HSL values but the range is not the same as in the HSL layer so I can’t replicate it.

Any suggestions on how I can pick a color from my photo and apply it to a selection on that photo? Thank you.

Make a selection around the white lid to confine the recolour. Use the Eyedropper (colour picker tool) and set it to sample average 5x5px with auto apply colour set in context menu. Tap on desired colour. This updates the colour wheel fill with the selected colour. Select the recolour brush and start painting on the selected area. You will have to move the brush to a new star point whenever lid colour changes or adjust the tolerance.

My preference is make a selection as mentioned above if you find it helps with the colouring then add a pixel layer above, change its blend mode to colour, use the colour picker as mentioned above then paint onto the new layer using the usual paint brush tool. Adjust the opacity of the layer to adjust to taste.

Thank you both for the tips! I followed both of your methods and I got the same result. Unfortunately in both cases, the color that ends up being painted is not the color that is selected with the color picker tool. It’s a much lighter color as you can see below:

Try average 17x17px for a broader, darker average selection and play with layer blend modes after painting. This is Multiply blend on selection, with a different dropper setting and selection point.

Using a Gradient map adjustment is another option. Apply to selection, pick dark tones, mid tones and highlights with gradient picker. Choose a blend option that suits and the curve blend to adjust strength.
