Page Number Sub-Sections e.g. 5A

Hi,

 

Is it possible to add a letter to a number in page numbering, e.g. 3, 4, 4A, 5, 6. I have to add some pages to a document which has already been distributed. Re-numbering all of the pages would require them all to be printed again. Adding a letter would mean the new pages could be inserted by the third party.

The Table of Contents would have to accept this numbering.

I've experimented but haven't found a way to do so.

You could try adding sections and restarting the page numbers. You would have to have section "New Material A1" start at 4 (plus you would need a master for the page number + the A)  and the next section start at 4 as well. I guess you could just add the letter A onto the new page instead of using the master.

You can, but it will be somewhat complicated, and I don't know if it will carry over to the TOC.

I can only see it working if your original document is not set up with facing pages.

Suppose you have a 12-page document, and you insert a new page after page 3. It is actually page 4, but you want it to be page 3A.

Edit the page number for this page - change it to Previous Frame Page Number and type an A after the number. 

Now use Document - Section Manager to create a new section starting on page 5. Restart the numbering sequence at 4:

Page 5 of the document is now numbered 4, page 6 is numbered 5, up to page 13 which is numbered 12.

You can repeat this as many times as you want, remembering that every time you create a section the difference between the number of pages in the document and the page number on the last page will be increased by one.

I don't know what effect this would have on the TOC or index. At the end of the day, if you increase the number of pages the underlying page numbers will also increase.

The TOC and Index won't know about the A suffix, and will use the real page numbers.

My thanks to you all for your help. And so quickly too. I can't say how much it is  appreciated.

After trying your ideas and confirming what Walt wrote about the TOC I think I've found a way around this by increasing the right-hand margin on the TOC page and adding an A in a text box. It's not ideal but it will have to do. I guess that for normal publishing pages with As in them are never needed.
