Glenorchy
If I try to open more than on previously created Publisher file, it hangs with "Not Responding" message (until I force close the application). This started with version 1.8.4, has continued with 1.8.5. I have reverted to 1.8.3, which is working OK.
Staff Gabe Posted August 27, 2020 Staff Share Posted August 27, 2020 Hi @Glenorchy, Can you attach a screen recoding of this in action please?
Glenorchy
I have removed versions 1.8.4 and 1.8.5 and reverted to 1.8.3, which is working OK. I am reluctant to go through the rigmarole of installing 1.8.4/5 again, and then having to remove it again to demonstrate the problem to you. There is not much to show - upon opening a second afpub file, Publisher window fades after a few seconds then just shows "Not Responding" in the title bar. It stays like that until I force close Publisher using Task Manager.
Staff Gabe Posted August 28, 2020 Staff Share Posted August 28, 2020 That's fine. If you do decide to give 1.8.5 another go, let us know, and we can have a look to see what's going on.
Glenorchy
Is there an error log file written by Publisher?
Staff Gabe Posted August 28, 2020 Staff Share Posted August 28, 2020 Not for freezing. We would generate a crash report when it crashes. You can try this to force generate a dmp: On 10/21/2019 at 1:23 PM, Dan C said: Can you please; Download ProcDump from the following link - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/sysinternals/downloads/procdump Extract the files from the zip folder, then create a new folder on the root of your C:\ drive called ProcDump then move procdump64.exe into this folder. Open Command Prompt (cmd from the Run dialog) then type cd\procdump and press enter. Now paste the following string and press enter, then make sure you leave CMD running. procdump64.exe -mp -w photo.exe Now with CMD running in the background, try launching Affinity Photo and wait for the app to freeze. Force quit Open the folder C:\ProcDump - hopefully you will have a .dmp file created here that you can upload to your response.
Glenorchy
ProcDump run as instructed for publisher.exe Publisher.exe_200829_120039.dmp
mark.gamisch
hi! i have the same problem here. running publisher on windows 10 pro. try to open a file with more than 32 pages and many pictures. the titel page shows up, then publisher freezes, the cpu van speeds up, cpu load gets to 100% and all you can do is to end the task in taskmanager. i attached one of the .afpub files that makes the app crash. this is a really serious problem: i can´t work at this moment. if the problem doesn´t exist in previous version (1.8.3?) where can i get them? thanks in advance and greeting from germany! mark bocholter_bote_01_2020_-_Kopie.afpub
Staff Gabe Posted September 1, 2020 Staff Share Posted September 1, 2020 Hi @mark.gamisch . Issue logged. It seems to be a regression. @Glenorchy I'm wondering if you see the same thing as @mark.gamisch. What happens if you create 2 new files in 1.8.5, save them, and then try to open these new 2 files? Does it still hang?
Glenorchy
Tried 2 new files, saved and opened them - all OK. The two afpub files were first created a year ago with an earlier version of Publisher. I don't think it is the same as mark.garnish, as there are many differences. My files only have 2 pages each, some pictures but not many. CPU does go up a bit, but not much - task manager capture attached. I have attached the two files that cause the hang. I also confirm they open fine in v 1.8.3 or earlier A4_flyer_programme_2020-21_v2.afpub A4_flyer_programme_2019-20_v4.afpub
mark.gamisch
@Gabe i wonder if you could open my file. did publisher crash after that? or could the problem be very specific (regarding my computer or system)?
mark.gamisch
@Glenorchy i downloaded one of your files an had no problem working with it (using 1.8.5)
mark.gamisch
opening the second files makes publisher crash - same as you experience Glenorchy
Glenorchy
Mark: I tired opening your file. It seemed to open at first, showed first page, then CPU went to 94% and eventually Publisher showed "Not Responding"
mark.gamisch
ok, that proves that something generally is wrong, not only in my system Glenorchy
Staff Gabe Posted September 1, 2020 Staff Share Posted September 1, 2020 Thanks both. I can now replicate it with your files @Glenorchy. I will log these straight away.

mark.gamisch
i just deinstalled publisher 1.8.5 an installed 1.8.3. no crashes, works perfectly. my documents have the page miniatures (they don´t appear in the 1.8.5 version either). so serif made changes between 1.8.3 to 1.8.5 that causes these problems. hopefully the next update will fastly fix this....😥 Glenorchy

mark.gamisch
me again! i just found out, that the file attached above can be opened by publisher 1.9.1. so this may reduce your search for this error in the code...
Staff Gabe Posted June 28, 2021 Staff Share Posted June 28, 2021 I think this may be a different issue as I can open the file without having all your resources. Can you save that document as a package, zip it and upload it again?
carl123
The file appears to hang on me using 1.9.2.1035 but opens OK in 1.10.0.1098 (beta) Gets as far as warning message about missing resources then hangs when you acknowledge that dialogue Windows 8.1 Quote To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum.
