Can Anyone Please Translate This Short GIMP Tutorial For Affinity Photo?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I am a photo editing noob and I need some help. On YouTube there's an excellent tutorial which shows how we can obtain the full quality, High Resolution transparent image from the low resolution transparent image we can get from remove.bg by using GIMP. It uses mask layer and alpha channels to get the job done. But I can't figure out how to accomplish this in Affinity Photo.

Here's the tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzwRPq660m8

Can anyone please translate this tutorial for Affinity? I especially get completely lost in the "transfer alpha channels" part while creating new mask layer, I can't find any equivalent option in Affinity.

Please post instructions. Any screenshot or two will really help.

Many thanks in advance :)

P.S: It's a really cool tutorial so I am sure it will help many other newbie members too.

It’s a lot simpler in Affinity Photo

  1. Upload the image to remove.bg - download the preview image.
  2. Open both the original image and the remove.bg preview image in Affinity Photo
  3. Resize the preview image to match the original
  4. Press Press CMD (⌘) + A on Mac, (Ctrl + A On Windows) to select all, then Press CMD (⌘) + C on Mac, (Ctrl + C On Windows) to copy that selection
  5. Click on the original image tab and press Press CMD (⌘) + V on Mac, (Ctrl + V On Windows) to paste the preview image into the original
  6. Right click on the preview layer and select mask to below

Really, I am absolutely in awe of Affinity Photo.

Well it can only get better 😁 my friend, and if they listen to some of the pro users it will be a tour de force in a few years.

I bet the process listed above; with a slight modification, could be made into a macro, so an automated click once affair.

Hey just an update, in case you are still seeing it:

I just tried it in a complicated photo and it is glorious. I am almost weeping in joy.

I have tried PS before but I decided graphics design is not for me (I actually still have that PS subscription running cause I can't cancel it without being hit with an early cancellation penalty :( ). Can you point out some resources to start learning Affinity Photo in a systematic way. The problem with YT tutorials is that they are all over the place. There are so many things you can do. So what the concepts and techniques I should learn first.

I would like to design book covers with Affinity Photo.
