Katie Bowes Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 Hi, After creating a document and converting it to a PDF, I needed to go back in and alter something. I discovered that I was unable to work with the text any longer. It's created a nightmare and I've had to go back to an earlier iteration and try to repeat the process. Only to discover that it's happened again. I think I've narrowed it down to adding a Master containing text above the main text box. (I'm a novel writer.) Now, I have another useless document. Has anyone else come across this? I can't work out what's happening. Quote

"Converting" usually mean save in another format that'll keep the same properties and permit modifications. "Exporting" give usually other formats that are less modifiable than the original file. If you've mess you original APub file, can you provide an example, perhaps with filer text to try understanding the problem if deleting the Master Page with text above from your pages or simply deleting the text frame on this Master page didn't solve the problem? Katie Bowes Posted April 30, 2020 Author Posted April 30, 2020 Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. I exported it to PDF and then spotted issues with the PDF. So I went back to the original APub document to correct them and couldn't highlight any text on the APub or change anything. After much fiddling, I discovered it was because I had accidentally implemented the Master A twice. I assumed it wouldn't matter because it was already there and I'd changed something and then wanted to make sure it included some end pages. I found this by doing 'edit' and 'undo' until I got to the implementation of that master and found that was the action which released it. I have definitely discovered that you can't mess with the Master Pages other than at the start of the project, unlike Indesign which seems a bit more flexible in making changes. Quote

But there are certainly issues you can cause by improper application or modification of Master Pages later in the process. It's not clear yet what you might have done. Scome screenshots of the page in question might help, including the Layers panel with the Master Pages layers expanded. Katie Bowes Posted April 30, 2020 Author Posted April 30, 2020 I'm unable to highlight any text, even though the text tool is on. The cursor wants to stay at the top of the left hand page and is happy for text to be added there, but not to anything on the right hand page. Hopefully, I've shown you the right layer part? I'm very new to this so apologies for the lack of knowledge etc. Quote
Wosven Posted May 1, 2020 Posted May 1, 2020 Hi, You've got too many master pages on your pages. You can apply your master pages to the spread, or only on pages. Don't forget to replace existing master pages when you apply another one. If you want a separate master page for page numbering, I would recommend applying this one to another master page, and applying this other master page to your pages. The result will be the same, and you'll have less master pages applied on your pages, avoiding such error or difficult management of many master pages on the document's pages. Quote
Katie Bowes Posted May 1, 2020 Author Posted May 1, 2020 Thank you for taking the time to work that out for me. I watched the Affinity tutorials and they recommended having a master page for each different feature. So, I had Master A for the margins and bleed and Master B for page numbers and header. I hadn't thought to look at the Layers panel though and as soon as you pointed that out, I could see the same 2 applied twice, instead of once each. Quote
