I may be missing something, but every time I reopen my AD on my desktop pc, my tool preferences need to be redone.  I always use  "Select object when intersects with selection marquee" because I do a lot of small work and it's not productive to try to pick each object separately and impossible to differentiate identical layers. Is there no way to save preferences in tools as I can in keystrokes (thank you designer). Thank you for any help.

Welcome to the forums.

The “Select object when intersects with selection marquee” setting should be saved when you close Designer. Whatever you set in Preferences should be kept for the next time you open the application.
If that is not happening then if you tell us which version of the application you’re using, and on which OS, someone can check this further. (I checked on Windows 10 Home 1909 with Designer 1.7.3 and it’s working fine for me.)

Yes, but it may not be saved unless you Close the program successfully. If the program crashes, the changes may not be properly saved, in my experience.

Absolutely, but since Colleen didn’t mention anything about the application crashing – possibly a more severe failure than a preference not being saved – I thought it might be reasonable to assume – at least at first – that the software was closing down correctly.

Colleen, on top of the details requested above it might be helpful to give some information about any other 'non-OS' software you might also have installed. For example, do you have any automatic backup/restore processes running? Do you have any ‘system cleaner’ or optimisation software running regularly? That sort of thing.

And, along the lines of what Walt said above, how are you closing the application? Are you using menu “File → Exit”, or are you closing it via a window icon, or are you terminating it via a Task manager or similar? If you’re not closing the software by one of the standard means – differs between OSes – then that could be part of the problem.

Also, and this is a long shot but I’ve seen it before: When you close Designer, do you also uninstall it and then install it again the next time you need it? I’ve seen this happen when someone isn’t quite clear on how to use software. As I say, it’s a long shot but worth asking anyway.

I just purchased AD 1.7.3 and am using it on Windows 10 home with latest update as of Feb 2020. I have Ccleaner, AVG and Malwarebyte all free additions. None of which ran between turning AD on and off. No auto backup that I know of. Turning off is done by Save> click X icon in corner. No, I don't reinstall it each time. Have icon on desktop.

Hmm…
Here are a couple more things you could try:
* Customise your toolbox via “View → Customise Tools...”. Try dragging a few tool icons to the toolbox – that weren’t already there – and then close Designer and re-open it. If the tools you dragged over aren’t still there then that could be another symptom of the problem.
* Import some Assets – there are plenty of free ones in the Resources forum – then close and re-open Designer. If the Assets are missing then, again, that could be another symptom.
There may be some Permissions issues but you would need to say how you obtained Designer, either via the Microsoft Store or from Serif directly (each is a slightly different kind of installation).

I turned it on today and it seems to be working with my presets so maybe it was just a glitch or something but will take a look at your suggestion just in case it happens again.

Thanks so much for helping out.

Curious.
When you are finished with your computer for the day, what do you normally do with it? Shutdown, Hibernate, Sleep, or something else?
Do you have ‘fast startup’ – Control Panel / Hardware and Sound / Power Options / System Settings – enabled?
Did you do anything differently to normal the last time?

I usually hibernate at night. shut it down every couple days but restart it when there are issues. Run malware, avg and ccleaner every three days or so. I don't think I did anything different. My power options are set to recommended -balanced. I've been trying to reinstall windows 10 because my pc is running off - like this preference issue - but my internet is so slow (756kb DSL, - the fastest I can get in my area) and unreliable - archaic cracked wiring that goes out dozens a time a day. It won't let me reinstall without timing out. I wondered if maybe something got missed when I downloaded AD in the first place but no warning came up. Other AD things are going on (which I'm trying to resolve) like I made a vector brush and it works fine - crisp and clean - ever since the my other attempts all have a gray background I can't get rid of. Wouldn't AD have had an error window come up if it didn't install properly?

This is a weird one.
I think you’re doing everything right but I can’t figure out what’s going wrong.
Maybe someone else can come up with some ideas.

The installer should, ideally, check itself to see if it has been properly downloaded by using a checksum or something similar. I would expect that if the download of the installer failed you wouldn’t be able to run it.
If there was a problem during installation I would expect the installer to display a relevant message – as some other people have been seeing recently – but the installer, essentially, only copies files over and sets some registry keys. It’s when the software is run, and it starts to interact with the rest of the system, that I would expect most issues (if there are any) to show up.
The installers – for me at least – seem to only get around 25% of the way through the progress bar before saying they’re done – which is a little disconcerting – but I don’t know why.

Unfortunately I don’t create brushes enough to be much help with diagnosing a problem with them. You might want to create a separate thread for that issue.

Thank you for you help. I just installed the 1.8  updated and my preference are still working I say with crossed fingers. The update may have fixed the gray box issue though now repeat function on brush doesn't work. One thing or another, Gremlins abound.
