Hey very new to Affinity so this could be quite simple: I am adding outer shadow to my text and have done so on a separate document successfully, however not on this one. I've fiddled with the settings to make a potentially massive shadow in a bright yellow so I notice when it shows, but it isn't showing. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Hello, Razta,

Expand the "Outer Shadow" tab of the studio (by clicking on the cog to the right of its name) and change the Shadow Blend from "Multiply" to "Normal".

G13RL’s advice above is probably what you need.
The “Multiply” Blend Mode will always produce a darker result so putting a Multiply Blend over black will always get you a black – therefore ‘invisible’ in this case – result.
This page https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/blending-modes.html was posted a while back on this forum and I’ve found it very useful.
This page https://photoblogstop.com/photoshop/photoshop-blend-modes-explained is even more useful if you want to get into more detail, especially if you want to know the maths behind what’s happening (e.g. for Multiply, AxB therefore 0xAnything = 0).

Thank you both for your advice! I was able to get the result I wanted by switching to Normal Blend Mode :) Much appreciated!
