So other development teams do listen, comply to every whim?

Sounds like a kid wyning it can't have the candy he wanted.
Now your mommy is a bad person and you won't go take the daily shower because of it.

    Sad

Being a professional means you pick the right tool for the job. That is certainly not Affinity Designer allthough the marketing desperately tries to reach professionals too. And having 10 years of experience with Serif we see the same pattern emerge. Incomplete software and years of waiting. Pointless when the competitors delivered 10 years ago. And when Affinity starts all over and leaving the old file format behind. 1995 again.

What astonishes me is the fact that you haven't yet realized where all this rant comes from, and one would say it's pretty obvious, it's under your nose.

You guys can have all the reasons to do what you do, but if only you wouldn't market apple as if they were orange, people would calm down, at least there would be less confusion (considered it's already difficult to keep track without a serious roadmap).

On a side note: sometimes rant comes from passion because developers are not the only ones who spend time on a product, but the end user as well.

    +1

And just to make it clear to everone here. Developers are not decision makers. Their job is to recommend and implement the best technical solution in the machine room to whatever decision makers should decide. Decision makers - whatever rank they may have - must follow a vision for the product - but certainly most of all take into account what customers need. A vision is a dream. Market demand is reality. Somehow on the famous internet posters talk about developers like they are the only beings in software companies. And the tone is like you customers owe them something special? They CODE the software. They work 9-5 like you do. When you are their customer, they work for YOU. When they are your customer, you work for THEM. You don't have to behave like you owe volunteers on a hospital something. Rant if you must.

You have a lot to think about. The software is cheap, yes, but Serif is a small company. Now they started all over on three huge products and they will also make two big iPad apps as well. New users will not remember DrawPlus and PagePlus and the history behind the development. But everything took forever. Cheap is not an advantage if you wait for years. Real scientists are not afraid of death. They are afraid of time!

As @verysame said. Look under your nose, Serif. You made an apple. Not an orange. Market an apple. Your marketing always made your software look like much more than it really is. If you compare your attitude on this forum with more serious and bigger companies, you will observe a more professional approach from the staff in bigger companies. This forum is more or less like open source software forums where stubborn developers take it personal when a majority of the user base turns against them after a bad decision was made and implemented - and other developers even have to fork the code to make a wrong right.

I have to spend my money elsewhere. That ... is... the... whole... point.

  3. Thx for visuals.

Allright @Ben, how - using your new snapping - would you remember and recreate fx this particular corner again and again? To the pixel? With total precision? It is an easy workflow that is also easy to remember as a formula so the corner gemoetry can be recreated. Place node on grid intersection, place one handle two intersections below, the other handle four grid intersections above. Not a perfect match - but rather a formula.

Once I have a curve geometry that is red line in a particular design - icons, logos, corporate design guidelines even in illustrations - how do I recreate it again accurately?

I use handle snapping and the grid more than any other snapping types.

  4. Thew point is not (only) that these two handles should be a match. It is also that handles in all kinds of shapes can be placed so that they match handles on other shapes. And can be placed easily. That dozens or even hundreds of corners and curves can be made exact replicas of curves in other shapes. And a lot more. The whole point of snapping of whatever is total control. And software asissted precision. If Serif doesn't understand the use case that Corel, Adobe and the community behind Inkscape (and others) understood, fine. I see your target audience. I just have to contact Serif for a refund. People asked for this for years, and it was never part of the retired DrawPlus. I do not see it coming. Further not having the beta 1.7 beta makes it even more complex to understand the "alternative".

If you could at least make the 1.7 beta available.

  5. I am sorry Ben - I don't have time for this - or for waiting years for it to be implemented. I guess Affinity Designer is just not the tool for me. It was fun with a new player, but it is just Drawplus in new clothing. There is more sense in sticking to software that does the trick. I don't need all of Illustrators features, but I always needed this. I hate wasting money. But please make it an option in some preferences/settings or on the toolbar (like in Inkscape), so users whose work depend on the feature have it available. I don't use vector drawing tools for drawing manga cartoons, land- and cityscapes, people, posters or art. I use it for logos, icons, UI elements and sometimes adjusting a typeface. I use it for consistent accuracy, symmetry and because it allows a fast, precise and efficient workflow.

Why? As one on the Adobe forum said:

"I require this to have consistent curves within an icon or illustration"

    Or:

Insane that this was removed without adding an option in preferences. Snapping handles to the grid is imperative for precise icon and logo design.

    Another one:

UI, UX, branding, typography—they’re all very precise arts, especially in a world of retina/Hi DPI screens and mobile devices. If you can’t snap your curves in Illustrator, then precision or coherence is incredibly difficult to achieve.

And for the fun of it a little reading (and PLEASE read the full thread below, Ben) when Adobe got a bad idea and removed the feature from Illustrator. They had to put it right back in and it works like a charm in the current version of Illustrator:

That's correct - the handles won't snap to grid lines/intersections - they will snap to the directions of the grid lines and intermediates, relative to their linked curve node (so, vertical, horizontal and diagonal for regular grids). As far as I know, that caters for all the use cases that people have described - the direction of the handle the key thing, rather than its absolute position.  If anyone has a different use case, then please post it.

My need is that handles snap to grid intersections. I am not using snapping to draw something in perspective. I am using snapping to construct precise and symmetic shapes.

I just read the book "Vector Basic Training: A Systematic Creative Process for Building Precision Vector Artwork" by Von Glitschka. His techniques allow you to draw precise or symmetric shapes very very fast. When I read the book in 2011 I had just purchased DrawPlus and was surprised of the poor snapping features in DrawPlus - it made no sense. The tips in the book are hard and often impossible to follow. Well you can if you zoom in and make adjustments with your shaking hand and manual aligning. It just takes ages compared to automation. That is what we have software for, right? Then Affinity Designer surfaced and I was again surprised that these features were promised since 2014. You are SO close to being awesome. Please walk the last meters towards the goal! It is just the core of shape design that the software can assist your shaking hand and guarantee precision and symmetry.

    • Inkscape has a toolbar with snapping options that can be enabled/disabled on the fly. Its awesome. Snapping to grid intersections is one of the options.
    • Illustrator CC too can snap handles to grid intersections

It is simply essential to shape construction in my work. You can also control the (precise) length of each handle fast and easy. It really is a key feature and it is very frustrating to have the grid right in front of you. But you cant utilize it. :(

    Thanks

  7. Looks very handy indeed. Well done. :)

But I am still waiting for these important features that never found their way into DrawPlus either - so I am still using Inkscape and clumsy clumsy Illustrator CC for designing logos and shapes:

    • handles snapping to especially grid and guides (just check out how Inkscape does)
    • snap the node handle to a vertical / horizontal alignment and other angles (just check out how Inkscape does)

I know this was requested and discussed in other threads - just making my voice heard here as well. And I hope the wait will be over once 1.7 arrives. Pleeease. Otherwise I enjoy the user interface and aesthetics of  Designer much more than the competition. Almost there Ben.

Merry xmas and happy new hear!
