  1. @walt.farrell

Thank you Walt, for your reply.

The two artboards are separated from each other. I drew the text and lines in the artboard "Website Framework". I discovered this was in the wrong position at a certain moment, so I moved the container layer to another place. I deliberately say "another position" because I think in my hurry, I moved them to the other artboard ", Colour Scheme".

So, let's assume that I moved the container layer to the "Colour Scheme" artboard. How is it possible that the drawn text and line objects were still physically on the "Website Framework" artboard? Should they not be visible on the "Colour Scheme" layer?

But for now, after I moved the container layer to its correct position (in the "Website Framework" artboard), everything works as expected and no crashes anymore.

However, Affinity Designer should not behave this way. It should warn the user that something he did is wrong.

As I have said, I will try to simulate this behaviour when I have more time.

    I do appreciate your input.

    Chris

  2. Hi all,

In the drawing, there were two artboards. One for selecting a colour in a colour scheme, the other for the artboard for the drawing itself.

I found out that the layers which were moving on their own were drawn in the drawing artboard, but in the layer panel, there were in the other "colour scheme pallet. I don't know how this was possible. However, 30 minutes before it happens, I had to move layers because they were in the wrong position in the layer panel.

At this moment, Affinity Designer is again working as expected.

But still, it seems a bug to me. When I have more time, I will try to simulate the situation again.

  3. Hi all,

I am using Affinity Designer v2.2.0 on Windows 10.

I have a drawing with some container layers which contain normal object layers which can contain curves and text. When I change one of those objects in the drawing itself, it jumps out of the container layer to a position below in the layer panel.

After grouping those objects, a progress wheel appeared, and the screen became lighter. It remains the same for almost 30 minutes. Only the Task manager can close Designer.

I had this error before, but I thought it was my own doing being distracted. However, this time two other people were watching the behaviour of Affinity Designer.

Please, Affinity-Team, fix this bug because it makes the program unreliable.

Thank you for looking into my problem, which I do appreciate.

    Have a great day.

    Chris

  4. Hi Bob,

I am on Windows 10 and use the latest v2 applications on my laptop. From time to time, I have the same problem as you, a progress wheel and then nothing.

I already posted earlier in this forum, and here is the link:

    Designer-Photo-Publisher no longer starting

I solved this problem by using IObit Advanced SystemCare Pro, which fixed it easily. Maybe the free version will also work. If you are interested, here is the link:

    IObit Advanced SystemCare Free

    I hope this helps.

  5. Hi,

From time to time, I have the same problem as you. I click on Designer or Photo or Publisher, and for a short time, a progress wheel appears, and then nothing happens.

    It is very frustrating.

In my case, I solved the solution with Advanced SystemCare. Here is the link to my post about the problem:

    Topic Designer-Photo-Publisher no longer starting

I think the problem is inside the registry. After Advanced SystemCare finished, all three applications are working again. I am on Windows 10 and use the latest v2 versions.

In case you are interested in IObit Advanced SystemCare, here is the link:

IObit Advanced SystemCare Free repair tool

Try the free version first and see if that solves your problem. If not, you can buy the Pro version if you wish.

The first time, I re-installed the applications, however, that is a very tiresome process.

    I hope this helps.

  6. I use Scirra Construct 3 (C3), where my live project files are saved in the cloud on Google Drive. C3 works entirely in the browser. However, the project you are working on is stored in memory.

Because I store my files with Google Drive, I use the following method:

    1. You copy your Affinity file from the cloud to your local hard drive.
    2. Open the local file with your Affinity application of choice.
    3. You work and make modifications to that local file.
    4. You save it to your local hard drive.
    5. Close the document in your Affinity application.
    6. You copy your local file to the cloud (Google Drive, Dropbox).

I think it is safe, and document corruption should not occur. The method described above differs from working directly from the cloud, which is always wrong because of network errors. I never had any file corruption problems with the way I used above. Also, in C3, I never lost any project, but as Lee mentioned, the project is saved to the cloud, and the project you are working on is stored in memory.

My knowledge about this subject is limited. Can I ask if the above method is safe, or is storing the backup files on an external SSD better?

Thank you for your help which I appreciate.

    Chris

  7. Sometimes, when things go wrong, I also have to forward files, which I worked on for a long time, to the software vendor. If we cannot trust Serif or those who create our software, then moving on to another vendor is better. I never had any negative experiences when sending a file to Serif or any other software creator when asked.

I am sure Serif will not illegally use your publication because when they do, they are finished! If that comes out, they lose their trust and customers.

If you want your publication recovered, you have to trust Serif. Your other option is starting all over again or using another tool.

  8. Hi Walt and v_kyr,

Thank you both for your input. Regretfully, Affinity Designer crashed again when adding a CYMK color to my custom color pallet. There seems, again, no crash report. At this moment, the blue progress wheel is spinning. I will let the computer on until tomorrow morning and see what happens.

I understand that solving or even thinking about my problem, is difficult. Be assured that I do appreciate your efforts to help me.

  9. Hi all,

Affinity Designer 2.1.1 for Windows (Windows 10) crashed after creating a new brush category, renaming a brush category, and adding or modifying a brush. After the action, a progress wheel appears. When continuing any drawing action, AD is no longer responsive. When you close AD with the "X" close button, a window appears, sending the problem info to Microsoft.

I included a 22-second long video showing you the problem and steps. In the video, it is only one of the steps (creating a new brush). The same is true for other actions inside the brush panel.

After the crash, when Affinity Designer is restarted, the new brush is added, and can be selected and used without any crash.

Does anybody know what causes this crash and how to prevent it?

Thank you so much for your help.

    Chris

P.S.: I think this should be posted in the "Bugs" category. If so, please can somebody move this thread to the correct category? Thank you.

  10. Hi all,

I finally figured out how to set up a document in Publisher for Kindle Paperback printing. In case someone else is looking for the same information or has the same problems as myself, I give her the information.

Set the width and height exactly as you intend. For example, for a book 8.5" x 11", for the width, you set 8.5, and for the height, you set 11". For the bleed, you set a value of 0.125" for all sides of the page. 0.125" = 0,3175 cm.

When you export your document to PDF (for Kindle), select "Include bleed" in the export dialog. Export as PDF/X-1a:2003. This ensures that all transparencies (if any) are converted to white. It is forbidden to use transparency in your document for KDP. The PDF/X-1a:2003 type will flat your file.

It is hard to understand Amazon bleed. At one time, they say 0 bleed at the inner sides, then in another video, they say 0.125" on all sides.

Another problem I have is putting text on the spine in Affinity Publisher.

I am thinking about creating the whole cover in Designer with the total page width (0.125" (bleed) + 8.5" (page width) + 0.393" (1,27cm spindle width) + 8.5"(page width) + 0.125" bleed. I draw a rectangle from bleed edge to bleed edge and ensure I put "Snapping" on. I place a guide at the middle point of this rectangle so at least I have a reliable reference of the exact middle of the book. I take that vertical reference point as starting point for all my margins. This should hopefully lead to a perfect cover/interior.

My margins are outside, top, bottom: 0.472" (12mm) and inner margins 0.787" (20mm). This should give the intended results.

I still have to do a lot of research, but I slowly get where I wanted to be.

    Thanks, everyone, for your help.

    Chris

Ps: I include a screen-capture for a book of 150 pages, printed on white paper in standard color.

  11. Hello Firstdefence and Old Bruce,

Thank you both for your replies. Indeed, I will follow your advice and leave the page dimensions.

I looked at the information about KDP provided by Amazon. However, they contradict each other. In one place, Amazon states that at least 79 pages must be present for text on the cover spindle. In another place, they say at least 100 pages if you create the cover yourself and 130 pages if you use their cover creation tool.

So I will keep the document as it is, create my text styles and then create the content.

I wish you both a lovely weekend.

    Chris

  12. Hi everyone,

I want to publish a printed book on Amazon KDP. However, I am not sure if the page setup is correct. I included the original Affinity Publisher document with this post.

    Here is the setup:

    Page size: 8.5" x 11" (215,9mm x 279,4mm)
    Margins:
    Inner: 0.787" (20mm) / Outer: 0.626" (15,9mm)
    Top: 0.579" (14,7mm) / Bottom: 0.579" (14,7mm)
    Bleed:
    Inner: 0" (0mm) / Outer: 0.125 (3,2mm)
    Top: 0.125" (3,2mm) / Bottom: 0.125" (3,2mm)
    Color: CMYK/8
Color profile: U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2
No transparency (KDP doesn't allow any transparency, so be careful with FX effects like shadows)
    Colors in use (C M Y K order)
    CMYK_White: 0 0 0 0
    CMYK_Black: 0 0 0 100 (true black)
    CMYK_L_Shadow: 33 33 33 33 (Light shadow)
    CMYK_D_Shadow: 40 40 40 40 (Dark shadow)

Please, can you tell me if the included Apub document is correctly setup for KDP? Any extra advice you can give me will be very welcome.

I thank you in advance and appreciate your help.

    Have a nice evening.

    Chris

  13. To avoid all copyright problems, ask the artwork's creator; if you can draw it over, make changes. If they give written permission, you are in the clear. Maybe you have to pay for what you want, but that is normal, not?

I think there are enough websites like Unsplash and Favicon to free-to-use- artwork and photographs. For other pictures/artwork, you have to pay but hey! We all have to make a living!

    Chris

  14. Hi Paul,

You are correct that the cover template is proposed for the cover. However, because it is my first time creating a book for KDP, I wanted to check if what I did was correct. That is why I downloaded the cover template, put it on a background layer and saw if my bleed, page size and margins were correct. See it as an extra assurance.

Thank you again for your reply.

    Chris

  15. Hi Paul,

Thank you for your reply. The file I included is the interior of the book, not the cover.

However, I think I found what was wrong. I divided 18,106 by 2, which gives me 9,053 inches. Then I went back to the document setup and changed the 8,5 in 9,053 inches for the width. Now everything seems to be good (I hope) because the bleed in the template is smaller than the bleed in Affinity Publisher. I have included the new document with this reply

    I do appreciate your help.

  16. Hello Everyone,

Please, can you help me with a Kindle KDP bleed/margin/document size problem?

My document is 8.5 x 11 inches in size, a standard Kindle KDP template. I include both the original Affinity Publisher file and the closeup screen capture.

I downloaded a template from bookow.com to check if my document is correct. I placed that template precisely in the middle. Now everything seems out of alignment. I looked and tried many things; however, whatever I did, it seemed my document was utterly wrong.

Please, can you tell me what I do wrong and how I can solve it? Your help will be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

    Have a lovely day!

    Chris
