I wonder why a Text Frame isn't allowed to get its corners modified.

If you take a rectangle that already has rounded corners and convert it to a text frame, you can continue to adjust those corners after converting it.

Based on that, I agree it is a rather strange omission that you can't round the corners (or bevel them or whatever) of an existing text frame that did not start out that way.  I do hope this is fixed at some point.

  2. I think this would depend on the action being performed.  Actions like painting on a hidden layer I agree could clearly be blocked, but what about moving a hidden layer?

If the hidden layer being moved is selected along with other layers, it may easily be intended to move them so they stay together, even though that particular one might not be visible at that time.  Preventing that layer from being moved while hidden could in fact be an undesirable behavior.

This probably requires some thought to be given to it on a per-action basis.

Your convoluted 6 step procedure does not join curves.

Evidently not.  I tried it before posting that and it seemed to be doing so, but now that I try it again it clearly is not working.  It is extending the first curve, but not joining it to the second one.

Based on that I would need to agree with this request.

If given a choice between either one or the other feature, I would choose scrolling the studio rather than being able to scroll through values.

    Agreed 100%.

However, there ought to be a way to achieve both. Perhaps scroll values only if the input has focus. Or with modifier key.

Yes, that is exactly what I said above...  and what was already discussed on the other thread...

if they were to make some groundbreaking improvement on vectorizing,

I think it is important to distinguish as well between automatic tracing and manually assisted tracing.

There have been some rather strong hints that they intend for tracing to have its own persona: that means a nontrivial user interface for this feature, which suggests that they are looking to do much more than just a click-and-done with a few dropdown or sliders to adjust it.

Currently assets can not be shared directly among the applications, but you can manually export them then import them into the other applications from that.  You can also take the exported file and import it into the applications on another computer, or share it with other users as appropriate.

I would prefer that the rendering intent be available directly without going through a PDF however.

The Mac printing system is built on the foundation of PDF; you are going through a PDF whether you are aware of it or not whenever you print.

I do agree that it is unfortunate that there is not currently an option to do this directly from the print dialog, though I would argue it should really be provided by the OS rather than by the application.

In past versions of MacOS X, it was possible to select a "Quartz Filter" to be applied while printing, and the list of those could be customized to include options that would set the rendering intent, but sadly that was removed at some point.  The filters can still be customized using the ColorSync Utility, but I can no longer find any way to apply them when printing (other than using ColorSync Utility to do it).

By the way, if you drop an alias to ColorSync Utility into /Library/PDF Services it gets added to the PDF menu button in the Print dialog, and selecting that opens the PDF in ColorSync Utility much as you can open it in Preview...  the only strange thing I've noticed is that it opens behind the current application instead of in front of it. 🤨

With panels such as 'Paragraph' that has a lot of options, it'd be good to have the scroll bar respond to mouse scroll to access items that are hidden. At present, we have to navigate to scroll bar, click and drag.

To give some history on this one, it originally did.  The problem is that the scroll wheel also adjusts values in numeric fields, and users were trying to scroll through the panel and changing values randomly along the way.

Instead of fixing the problem of the values changing while scrolling, the developers took the curious and highly questionable step of disabling the scroll wheel (or equivalent) completely for the panel.

In my opinion, they should either arrange for the values to change only if the field has focus, or require a modifier to be held down while scrolling the wheel - either way, scrolling the panel should not happen at the same time as changing the values.

This has already been discussed at length in another thread that is floating around the forums somewhere...

In fact, I believe all of these requests have already been made on other threads, separate from each other (as they should be - including multiple requests in one thread is a bad idea).

    the quickest workaround I've discovered

Wow is that a long way around!

First off, @Jude Anison, welcome to the forums!

A much faster approach was already mentioned earlier in this thread: perform the crop using the crop tool, then right-click the layer in the Layers panel and choose Rasterize and Trim - that option will destructively trim off the excess from the image.

The Rasterize and Trim command can also be found in the Layer menu, and you can add a keyboard shortcut to it in Preferences if you wish.

I know the Affinity team is scared that people will complain that it isn't perfect,

They are not scared, they just don't want to waste time implementing it badly only to turn around and replace it with something better later on.  There are too many other things they can better spend that time on while they are figuring out how to implement a version of the feature that they can be happy with.

  11. If I correctly understand what you are trying to do:

    1. Select the two objects and choose Layer -> Geometry -> Merge curves to combine them into a single curve object
    2. Switch to the pen tool
    3. Hold down the command key (Mac - whatever the key is to temporarily use the node tool) and click on one of the nodes you want to connect
    4. Release command, click on the same node, then click on the other node you want to connect, to connect them
    5. Switch to the node tool
    6. Select the nodes that are no longer needed and use the delete key to delete them
  12. Hi @Joost9972, welcome to the forums!

First I would like to point out that this is in the wrong section of the forums; feature requests should go here: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/53-feedback-for-affinity-designer-on-desktop/

Filling a text box with color is already possible in Publisher but the interface for doing this has not been exposed in Designer.  If you also have Publisher, you can use File -> Edit in Publisher to transfer your document to Publisher to add a fill or stroke color to the text box, then File -> Edit in Designer to send it back (or use the Designer persona from within Publisher itself).  Within Publisher, the color of the text frame can be adjusted using the Fill Tool (with an option on the context toolbar which does not appear in Designer) or by using the Text Frame studio panel (also not available in Designer).

From either program, you can convert an arbitrary vector shape to a text box using Layer -> Convert to Text Frame.  After doing this you can still modify the shape of the frame by using the node tool.

8 GB is a bit low RAM for big project

I've also been wondering about this.

On my Mac Affinity Photo was taking up roughly 686 MB of RAM with no document open.

Opening a 49 MB TIFF file spiked that to 853 MB, an increase of nearly 200 MB.

If the OP has a 380 MB TIFF, rounding up to 400 MB times 4 gives about 1.6 GB of memory usage, so figure on over 2 GB of memory usage for Affinity Photo - as a starting point.  Add the OS plus disk cache to that, and even with nothing else running, I suspect 8 GB is enough to function, but may be a bit constraining, particularly if more layers are added.

To @jmagill: close all applications you don't need, then open Activity Monitor (under /Applications/Utilities) and go to the Memory tab.

While using Photo and experiencing the slow performance, check the "Swap Used" along the bottom of that Memory tab - if that number is significant then your computer is probably suffering due to low system memory.

  14. #3 was very likely a misstep.  Setting the RAM usage limit higher than the physical memory on your computer is more likely to slow things down than to speed them up.

Instead of saving in another non-native format, save as a native Affinity document - do a SAVE not an EXPORT - and work from that.  Do the EXPORT of the final product when you are finished.

    Under Preferences -> Performance, try:

    • Reduce the RAM Usage Limit below the 8 GB of physical RAM you have (try 7 GB for example).
    • Toggle the checkbox to enable metal compute if it is available.  If things get slower, switch it back.
    • Change the "Display" setting: if it is on OpenGL, try Metal; if it is on Metal, try OpenGL.  If things get slower, switch it back.

Have you Authorised global Preferences > Plugins in your MAS version?

Thanks, I did miss that, and it fixed the crash problem.

The first time I opened it after doing this I had to re-enter my registration information for some reason, but it seems to be working correctly now when there is no selection or mask.

When there is one, it shows the entire image in the plugin preview, but actually does mask the selected area as the only part it is being applied to.

As far as I can tell, once the Authorize Global is completed, the plugin is working perfectly in the MAS version.

It would certainly be nice if the application didn't crash when a user doesn't know to take that authorization step, though...

Be great to be able to create a design and then store it away as a symbol or perhaps something like the libraries feature in Photoshop so you can quickly bring back your designs into Photo or Designer etc

You don't need symbols for that, the Assets panel is likely a better fit, and that one is available in Photo.

Unfortunately they do not sync among the apps - each of them has its own assets library - but the feature is there in all three, and you can export assets from one app and import them into the others.

Missing is the cog from the gaussian blur in Effects panel

I think that is because all of the options specific to that blur are already in the panel so there is nothing more to reach via a cog.  That is not true of Outer Shadow...

Second that would be handy is a direct option to scale with object next to fill opacity field in Effects panel

Yes, it would be nice to have that added for those who use this panel.
