Nodes outlined in red - what do they mean?

The red nodes are end nodes. In the example below, the top curve was drawn from left to right and the bottom curve was drawn from right to left.

For a closed curve the start & end nodes are the same node. This means there is no simple way to tell an open curve with its start & end nodes colocated (one on top of the other) from a closed curve with a single start & end node.
