Update to 1.7 is now unusable

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I  just updated my copy of Designer up to the current release and now it's totally unusable due to lag. Creating just a simple shape and trying to move it/edit it results in a huge delay. I can't remember exactly which version I had prior but I think it was the direct predecessor and all was perfect with that release.

Is there anything that I can try/known issues before I go ahead and try reinstalling? I'd normally go through and try various things but I'm pushed for time and so am hoping someone can give me some pointers?

My machine is running Windows 10 and has plenty of horsepower.

Thanks in advance..

Hi Dooza, when my Windows machine in the office starts to seriously lag a reboot often sorts the problem. It also sometime lags & does strange things when Windows wants to install an update.

It might not work for you but It is pretty quick, if you are still having problems after a reboot maybe someone else can assist.

Hi Murfee, I was just typing when your reply came in.

Strange, after restarting the program (not the machine), it's quite a bit more responsive. I don't know if the lag is a progressive accumulation over time now but having tried a couple of sessions it's been dragging horribly after a while.  I'll keep playing around as before and try and note any performance decrease. Just to add that nothing else is running on the system and have 8GB ram free (out of 12)..Bit strange.

So it's starting getting really choppy again since my last post..I'm still only playing with a few shapes as I'm doing some pattern design so nothing taxing..it does seem to be a cumulative effect. I've got 6GB ram free as opposed to the 8GB I had when I started..don't know if this is normal as I l've opened and closed some A.Designer files during working.  Could this be some memory leak type thing?

On Windows you could try this:

  1. Do a  fresh re-boot.
  2. Start the Task Manager.
  3. Start Affinity
  4. As you use Affinity, keep an eye on the memory usage of Affinity in the Task Manager. Do specific actions increase the memory use?
  5. Keep a note of the memory use and report back to this forum.

There is probably a similar procedure on a Mac.

I haven't rebooted yet but am finding that everytime I restart Designer, it goes back to normal and then over time gets worse and worse. That's why I thought it was maybe a memory thing but I've had task manager running the whole time  and don't really see any strange ram usage. I do note that when dragging a group of a few circles for example, the cpu usage goes up to 30% which may or not be bad?  It's an old (but still good!) 6 core Intel CPU and in task manager I'm seeing the 12 (6 physical, 6 virtual) cores all working.  Seems a bit high for dragging a few shapes about but maybe that's normal - I've never really eye balled cpu usage when working..! Also, the document size is A4 @300 ppi so nothing crazy to tax the system..
