I have had this problem with all the Affinity programs, the spell checker does not work when I start a new project and I have to poke around clicking on different things in the text and spelling things to get it to work. I am in Canada and your software always starts with "Spelling: Unknown (en-CA)". How do I tell your software to use it or what is the solution to this?

In Affinity Publisher, none of the pages are automatically showing any of the spelling errors and every spell object is showing "Spelling: Unknown (en-CA)". I can highlight all them to change the spell check option.

I have never had this problem with Serif PagePlus.

Please advise

Thanks

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums.

For English, Publisher provides support only for UK or US variants, not Canadian.

What do you have specified in Preferences, General, for Language (which sets the language for the UI, and should set the default language for Text Frames and Text Styles)?

I hesitate to suggest a fix for you without understanding how Publisher is coming up with en-CA at all, on Windows. Though I suppose it's possible that it's picking that up from your System Preferences. Possibly it recognized it as a form of English, for UI purposes, but was then unable to deal with Spell Checking because it doesn't have an en-CA dictionary.

In that case, your two possible solutions would be:

  1. Change your UI language to US or UK English, which would also change the default spell checking to that English variant.
  2. Install appropriate Hunspell en-CA dictionaries, if any exist. I didn't find any with a quick search, but it's possible I didn't search hard enough.

The Word add-ins might create several issues and errors. However, to fix “spell check not working on Word”, you need to open your MS word in a safe mode by pressing & holding the Ctrl key >> click the file to open it. After that, find one dialog box where you need to click on Yes.

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums, Alex.

We're talking about Affinity Publisher, and I'm not sure how that advice about Microsoft Word is relevant. Did you mean to post that here, or was it intended for some other forum?

I've been having the same problem. The preflight shows multiple instances of Spelling: Unknown (en-CA). My UI is set to US English. I have no desire to install Hunspell CA english in the slightest. I write in US English. Character / Language is set to English US. During preflight I have dozens and dozens of Missing dictionary for language (en-CA) in the Preflight listing. They'll be chapter titles, paragraph returns, single words, and on and on.

Do you have your Windows Region settings set to Canada? If so that may be causing it. Changing Windows to the US settings might resolve your problem.

Otherwise you could duplicate the en-US dictionaries and rename them as en-CA.

Or you could change the Spelling and Hyphenation languages to en-US, either in your Text Styles or via the Paragraph and Character panels. By changing the default Text Style "Base" you can make en-US your default for text you type, but I don't know if that will help if you open documents prepared elsewhere, or import text prepared elsewhere.

(And yes, to some extent these are all workarounds.)

I fixed most of it by changing Base as suggested. The remainder I went through and edited manually.

I work in US English. I have no need of any other dictionary.

I don't import the work of others. All of my work is my own. (Perhaps that's a part of my problem!)
