master page elements can be modified on child pages

Recommended Posts

We are allowed to edit/move Master page items on document pages, but it usually takes a special action (Edit Detached) to do that.

What did you do to move it?

Can you make the .afpub document available? Or at least a screenshot including the Layers panel for that page?

Sure, here is the full layer list. I have not been able to make it happen again, the background from the master panel refuses to move, no matter what I do which is unfortunate as I did not get it put back correctly, you can see a thin white line at the top of the second page. What do I need to do to get access to moving it on purpose ?

You need to change the editing mode to either Edit Detached (move for one page) or Edit Linked (assuming it was not edited detached previously, updates it across all pages).

This can be done in either of two places:

  • Right-click on the master page's layer in the Layers panel and select the desired mode from the menu that pops up
  • With the Move tool selected, select the master page's layer in the Layers panel and select the desired mode from the context toolbar

Note that editing detached only detaches the things you change - if you have a blue square at a specific position on the page, and use Edit Detached to move it, its position will detach and become unique for that page, but the color is still linked to the master page - if you later change the color on the master page itself or by using Edit Linked, it will be shared across all pages (assuming you did not use Edit Detached to change the color on one of them), including the one on which the square was moved.

Sadly there is no way at present to "re-attach" a property after it has been detached, other than re-applying the master page to the page, which will reset everything including the content of the items (if you have a text box on the master page and changed its content in one of the pages, then re-applying the master page will wipe out the content and reset it to what is on the master page).

As a point of reference, QuarkXPress instead creates a new copy of an item when re-applying the master as it no longer considers the one that was moved to be connected to the master at all (it detaches it completely, not just individual attributes, so changing the position of an item from a master page is enough to prevent color changes from being carried over too).
