How to add the node?

I was working on page 212 (Affinity Designer Work Book).  How can I continue adding the nodes?  I took a break for a while and I lost how to add the node.

Another question about another Node, it has a red squared red.  What is going on? 

I am tired now from trying to figure out how to add or continue the nodes.  I am not too happy about it.  I use the option (keyboard) and mouse to click on the blue line that shows up the nodes, but it does not let me add or continue the nodes that took me half hour with different buttons (keyboard) such as shift, control, option, and command.  (See the picture on the left side is my work - not finished.  The other picture belongs to Affinity's demo.)

Select either node at the end of the curve with the Node Tool (so that it is filled with blue), switch to the Pen Tool, & continue adding nodes to that end of the curve. If neither end node is selected, the Pen tool will start a new curve.

The type of node controls the connected segments. There are three basic types of node:

• Sharp (A)—causes an abrupt change in direction between segments, creating a point.
• Bézier (smooth) (B)—creates a continuous curve between segments.
• Smart (C)—creates a continuous curve but uses a line of best fit.

Red is last/end node.

From what I can tell, the only time the color of that node is of much value is to indicate that there are multiple curves selected, since there is one red node for each curve. But even that isn't always of much value since two curves can have their end nodes so close to each other that it looks like just one node unless the zoom level is extremely high.

So what am I missing?
