Barsky287 Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 Hi guys, I am new here! Just got Affinity Photo on my MPB13 2017 with touchbar, instead of photoshop. But I am having issues with the app. It renders/applies stuff just plain "laggy". I can even see the effects move in boxes... But what bothers me the most, is that I can't preview the image when its "fit to screen" (cmd+0). The image is really blurry. I simply can't work like this. PS ran really smoothly on my laptop, but Photo is a real challenge. Maybe i have something add in the performance settings ? Could you guys please advise on how to optimise the the app to run smoothly ? Please see the pictures attached with how it looks in Finder and in Develop persona (both are fit to screen). Thank you in advance ! Quote

The canvas is not the same size, and the picture is not the same size. Try displaying 100%, 1px display = 1px image, otherwise recalculation, and blurring. P. S. This is not Develop Persona (for RAW developing), but Photo Persona. Barsky287 Posted February 9, 2019 Author Posted February 9, 2019 Hi Psedna, Thanks for the reply. By displaying at 100% you mean the cmd+1 shortcut? Either way it does not provide the answer. How do you guys evaluate the work when it's fit to screen if it's blurry? Photoshop did display evething clearly sharp when the image is fit to screen. I just think that there should be a way to get this right. P. S. Yes it's not develop persona. My bad! Quote
Barsky287 Posted February 9, 2019 Author Posted February 9, 2019 Hi there, If I toggle the Retina Rendering to a higher quality, the overall performance of the app will go down exponentially. Maybe i should play with other settings to get the desired result ? Quote
Dan C Posted February 9, 2019 Posted February 9, 2019 Hi Barsky287, Welcome to the forums I recommend changing your display dropdown to Metal, and ticking the box at the bottom of your screenshot to enable Metal hardware acceleration. This should help speed up the app, and allow for a higher Retina Rendering setting. As >|< has mentioned, the image shown in Finder is likely an embedded JPEG image which has had some post processing applied to it by the camera, so you may need to increase the Clarity slider when developing the image in Affinity to closer match the Finder preview. Another thing to try is to change your RAW engine, as you may prefer the slightly different look that the Apple Core RAW engine applies to your image. You can change this by loading a RAW image into Affinity, then opening View>Assistant Manager>Develop Assistant... (in the bottom left corner of the open dialog). Here you can change the RAW engine in use using the top drop-down box, please note you'll need to close and re-open the RAW image for the changes to take effect. I hope this helps. Quote
Dan C Posted February 9, 2019 Posted February 9, 2019 Apologies, thanks for the clarification! lepr 1 Quote

Hi Dan, If i set check the Metal checkbox and set the retina rendering to High Quality, the app will significantly slow down, beyond the point of usability... However i did try to play around with the settings to see what will be the optimal choice. So here it is: View Quality - Bilinear Display - OpenGL/Metal (both perform relatively the same) Retina Rendering - High Quality (for the sharpening view) Hardware Acceleration - unchecked (when checked, it will lag severely) I did also try to switch the Raw Engine from Serif (default) to Apple. But both perform almost identical. Well at this point Developing the Image is not that big of a hassle. Don't get me wrong, it still has lag. BTW, do you guys are rocking AP on Desktops or laptops as well ? Could you please share your experience with the app performance? Much appreciate the help! Quote
