New user to Affinity Designer here!

When I open .ai files in AD, is there a way for the program to "gather" the pieces of art that were created outside of the artboard?

Vlad is absolutely correct. The way that Illustrator writes its files means that the only application that can look at anything placed off the artboard is Illustrator itself - even other Adobe applications cannot get access to that data...

So just to clarify – there will never be a way to accomplish this?

You can navigate to FreeHand Forum and ask why Adobe killed FreeHand and if you do not have, enough you can smile visiting Adobe gripes:

So, will Adobe open its proprietary format? I am afraid that the answer will be a big NO.
