You can do this by right clicking on the file -> Get Info -> Size. Can you also hold down Ctrl when you start up the application to clear your settings just so it isn't a UI thing. Run-through same procedure as before - new doc, Save As, Open - can find the new doc and appears to open it, but still have a black workspace. I am wondering, though, this afternoon, if I've occasionally hit "done" instead of "open"? I'm not aware that I might have been doing that, but I suddenly realised that I'm used to seeing cancel and open in Windows - and in some of the Mac boxes, too - and some of the terminology on the Mac does take a bit of getting used to. The first windows machine I used was a 356 (?), that's a long time on Windows, bat 1990. I've had nothing but issues with Yosemite, no Mac for a week until it suddenly started working again, couldn't even log on. Had it all checked at the Apple shop. So this looks like something that I tried just before the update and the update might have fixed it but, as with my previous update experience, it took a while to bed in. Thank you so much, guys, for all your help. I know a lot more about Macs now.
