Edit: Problem is partly solved (see post 11):
1. Runtime problem of Publisher 2.6., vanished after restarting the app
2. perhaps inconsistence in the data structures of the posted Publisher 2.x file

In a book I wanted to desing some hanging paragraps.

I am able to do this using the paragraph settings, as it is seen in the screenshot.
But it is not possible to create a paragraph template, that has the same settings. Instead when storing the template, these settings are resetted to the previous settings:

I just tested it and was able to create a template with those settings using these steps:

  1. Create a new document
  2. Choose the Frame Text tool
  3. Set Left Indent and First Line Indent to the desired values
  4. Choose File > Export as Template
  5. Close the file
  6. Create a new document based on that template
  7. Draw a text frame and the values I set were used

If you're still having an issue, could you please share a screen recording of your process?

Good luck

My process was just simple:
I duplicated my standard text style template in the current document.
Than I double clicked the new text style to edit propertiers.
Went to paragraph properties and set left indent: 0.7 cm. After that set first line to 0 cm.
In the moment you apply the changes to the paragraph style by pressing "OK" button, both values were reset to the original values, i.e. not saved.

Your 7 step way may function, but sorry, it should be possible to create a new paragraph template with these properties.

Edit: I changed the thread title to a description, which is more accurate. Sorry, it is not easy to find the correct English terms for settings, when you are working in a Publisher version in another language.

I presume that by the words "paragraph template" you could mean "Text style".

Anyway, it is not a problem here to attribute such a paragraph formatting to a text style: PNG50-Capturedcran2025-03-0815_15_41.png.aef785f2e366a544a7b63c6fce972543.pngPNG50-Capturedcran2025-03-0815_21_34.png.91b7ad1c01b64f747e6cc8d2ecc2bbe1.png

That is interesting.
Indeed I am able to create a new paragraph style that has this properties. Thank you very much!

But I am still not able to apply the same properties to a paragraph style that is created by duplicating one of the original paragraph styles of the document.
This Publisher document has been created in Publisher v 1.x. Perhaps the issue arises from working with a document, that was formerly a v 1.x document, but has been converted since then.

Edit:
I have attached a small file, that is created from my original document, that has the same issue.

Sorry, I am not able to do screen recordings.

What happens are two things:
1. When I apply this paragraph template to a paragraph, it does not produce hanging lines:
2. When I re-open the paragraph style template 2, the numbers are reset to that of the original paragraph style, from which this has been created.
Atteched new file version with the created style "Text style 2"
instead of 0,7 cm ... 0 cm it contains 0 cm, 0,7 cm.

Indeed I see your Text style 2 has no hanging indent, but I'm not able to reproduce that if I follow your instructions to create a Text style 3 or 4.

There are though some little twists that can lead to a different result than expected if you're not aware of them:

  • For a value to be recorded, you have to click in another field or press Tab or Return to confirm it before closing the dialog.
  • The created style (doing exactly as you said) is not applied to the current paragraph, even if the checkmark at the left bottom is not ticked — but the definition of the created text style is correct; you just have to apply it through the Text style panel or the contextual toolbar paragraph style menu.

Otherwise I don't see what can happen that prevent you to have the desired result?

We should probably really need to see what you do that can differ:

Your instructions seem wrong for a hanging indent.

Duplicate „Text style 1“, Rename it to „Text Style 2“, Change paragraph settings:
    Left indent: 0,7 cm
    Right indent: 0 cm
Save changes by pressing „OK“

It should be

Left indent: 0.7 cm
First line indent: 0 cm

As it is I have no problem making a hanging indent Paragraph Style by duplicating the Text Style 1 and making those two changes.

Now for the weirdness:

You have a hidden Paragraph Style called "CSP - B " and it has lots of overrides applied. I noticed this when I added some Filler Text. See how there is no Paragraph Style selected. I made a new text frame and the Selection for Paragraph Style disappeared and gave me this.

Thank you very much.
The issue is partly solved.

After I quit Publisher and reopened it with the test files, I was able to modify a copy of "Text style 1" into settings for a hanging indent. So it may have been a runtime problem auf Publisher 2.6, and not a corrupt file.

Nevertheless, this does not explain the strange behaviour of that file, that you had with a new text frame, which does not occur on my system.
So I suggest that the Affinity programmers look into the file to locate the "CSP - B" paragraph style inside the code, that is not listed in the panel. Perhaps there is some type of data inconsistence in the file.

The history of this file is as follows
– created with Publisher 1.x on a Windows 7 machine
– converted into Publisher 2.x on a Windows 10 machine
– transferred to Publisher 2.x on MacOS 15.3.1

What I am curious about is how the text was generated. I doubt it was all typed into Publisher. Most likely it was placed as a .txt file or a .docx file or copied and pasted from a different application.

Yes, original text of all books was written in Textmaker and stored as .docx files.
After import of docx files alle paragraphs were assigned to new paragraph styles, which were created in Publisher.
But character styles (bold, italics) mostly came from the docx files.
