  1. What Application are you using? [Photo]
  2. Are you using the latest release version? Yes, 2.5.7
    (here's how to check)
  3. Can you reproduce it? Not reliably. But happens often enough.
(if you cannot then we may struggle to also, making it even harder to fix)
  4. Does it happen for a new document? If not can you upload a document that shows the problem? Happens after a few edits. Example file attached.
  5. If you cannot provide a sample document then please give an accurate description of the problem for example it should include most of the following:
  •    What is your operating system and version (Windows 11 Pro 24H2)?
    • GPU is GTX 1060 3GB RAM, with latest NVIDIA drivers 566.36
  •    Is hardware acceleration (in Preferences > Performance) ON or OFF ? (ON, cannot reproduce when Off)
  •    What happened for you - PC stops responding to anything including mouse cursor stops moving
  •    Provide a recipe for creating the problem
    • Do some edits
    • Open export to save as JPEG
    • Entire system freezes to the point it requires a hard reboot
  •    Screenshots (very handy) or a screen capture/video.
    • Cannot take screen shot as OS is non responsive
  •    Any unusual hardware (like tablets or external monitors or drives that may affect things) or relevant other applications like font managers or display managers.
    • Tablet, but wasn't used at time of this happening
  •    Did this same thing used to work and if so have you changed anything recently? (software or hardware) Didn't have problems with last version (2.5.4)

I just tried to replicate the problem with your document on Windows 10 Home with Photo 2.5.7 and didn’t have a problem.

The preview took about five seconds to render but the export process went through okay.

I didn’t know exactly what you meant by “Do some edits” so I just did a bit of Inpainting before exporting.

If you can tell us which editing you did (if possible) and take a screenshot of your export settings before you press the Export button then we can try and replicate it more fully.

(My machine only has 16GB or RAM so I don’t think memory is an issue, and it’s not got a fast processor either.)

Hardware acceleration is incompatible with some systems, just leave it off, if that fixes the issue

You can try switching it back on when you read that they have made further changes to it, in a later beta/release

Thanks, it's definitely not a memory issue (I have 32GB RAM). The edits are the ones in the file attached to the ticket, nothing particularly tasking. What happens to me is that as soon as the export window shows, the computer totally freezes. The "circle" that shows rendering the preview doesn't move, neither does the mouse (With on Windows means complete hang)

Das ist ein Problem das seit Windows 11 24h2 auftritt und kann nur durch das deaktivieren der Hardwarebeschleunigung behoben werden.

Danke (That's the limit of my German..) I'll wait until there's a new NVIDIA driver, or an update to Affinity Photo.

I have the same problem, the only solution was to disable opencl, which is quite annoying since without it editing is very slow on larger files.

And here it started to give problems after updating Windows

Posted in 2 other threads with similar concerns, but throwing my experience in December into this thread as well.

After updating to Windows 24H2 Affinity Photo would completely hard hang up the system (even mouse would no longer respond, system fans would ramp up) necessitating a power cycle (I tried waiting but gave up after 20 minutes); no error logs would be created by Windows or Affinity. Rolling back to 23H2 within the 10-day rollback window fixed the issue for me, but by this point in time I suspect many people might not be able to do so.

From what I've read so far it seems most likely linked to OpenCL Hardware acceleration, and possibly Nvidia GPUs in particular. Turning off HW OpenCL acceleration seems to resolve the crashes with the expected performance penalty.

If time permits I'll see if updating to 24H2 this month (January 2025) still causes the problem or if a fix might have been made on Microsoft's or Nvidia's end.
