Hello,

I'm new to Affinity, coming from Photoshop.

I want to change the canvas size and color.

- I open the photo

- I hit Ctrl-Alt-C and enter the new size

- the canvas color is always white, regardless what foreground or background color is set.

- I have to add a new layer, define its color and send it to the background.

Is this the correct procedure?

In Photoshop I can define the canvas color directly when I change the size.

Welcome to the forums @blende8

The canvas colour - when the Document Background has not been set to be Transparent, see post below - is always white and there’s no way to change it other than doing something similar to the ‘work-around’ you have found.

The canvas colour is always white...

It can also be transparent, which displays as a greyscale checkerboard pattern.

Thanks for mentioning that; I’ve edited my earlier post to include that information, just in case someone stops reading at that point.

Here it looks checkered, when I enlarge the canvas.

This is Transparent background.

Is there a setting that defines if it is transparent or white?
