colour issues when exporting to file are terrible

Recommended Posts

I am new to Affinity Photo 2 and am using the free TRIAL offer.

My 1st hurdle is when I export to a folder the colour change when opening with Windows Photo Viewer is horrendous. So can you please let me know what needs to be changes.

I don't have this issue with CS6, Luminar Neo or ON 1 Photo RAW.. I have inserted both the photo I edited and the "Colour" settings so you can see what my settings are.

So how do I fix this issue

Hi @brenbiz and welcome to the forums,

This is likely because Windows Photo Viewer and its successor Photos are not colour-managed apps, unlike Affinity Photo which is... This means images viewed in the two Windows apps use sRGB.

The image you've edited in Affinity Photo uses the Adobe RGB Colour profile which can display a wider range of colours and means when your image is displayed in Windows Photo Viewer some of the colours in your image will be compressed and look visually different...

Thanks, although your explanations tell me why, it doesn't tell me how to fix the issue. I tried to see if I could change the colour settings but as you can see in my posted image those are the RGB settings available to me. There is no sRGB in either of the top 2 windows. Also what photo viewer do others use who work on a W11 computer.

In your Settings display, click on the Adobe RGB (1998) field to the right of the RGB Color Profile label to see the various available profiles, one of which should be sRGB IEC61966-2.1 or the like. However, this just sets the default for use in new documents, as explained here.

So for your existing documents you could use the Document > Convert Format/ICC Profile menu item to convert the document to that profile.

Probably the most popular photo viewer is Irfanview, which is free and widely praised -- the website claims over a million downloads per month for the past 20 years. It does have color management settings, though I don't know enough to evaluate them.

Thanks, I shall definitely go look into that 😊

I still fail to understand the actual issue. Windows native previewers appear to be "reasonably color managed" (contrary to Googled trivia also expressed within this thread). But this might also be something involved with Topaz plugins and RAW images, which would make previewing much more complex.

It seems to me that Affinity gives so many options which is great if you're a techie but it would have been helpful to have their default setting same as other editing software. Anyway I've learnt something new lol
