I spent some time in Preferences/Shortcuts and now I have the tools that I use most often reassigned to singular Shortcuts that are intuitive for me.  Takes a bit of work to reassign/unassign the extra tools that are assigned to certain groups but it sure makes life easier.

I really don't like having to choose a tool icon by clicking another tool icon with a submenu. It just seems like it takes way more effort than it really does. I solved the problem for myself by using View > Customize Tools... and rearranging the Tools palette.

I increased the palette to 3 columns and got rid of (almost) all the tool icons that have submenus (the ones with the little triangles). Then, I loaded the palette back up with individual tool icons (no submenus). I threw in a few dividers so that the tools I use all the time can be clicked on directly, and are grouped into fairly logical categories.
