Hi there,

I've attached a few screenshots to illustrate how that when i create a new document the layer does not show up in the layers panel.

You can also see that i have the layer checked in the drop down menu. I'm on windows 11 and using Affinity Photo version 2.3.1

I have figured a simple workaround and which is that after i create a new document (that doesn't show up) i add a new pixel layer add any colour, and this now becomes my background which i can switch on and off as in screenshot 4 or i just make it transparent to start with.

However i'd much rather sort out the document issue.. thanks

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums.

A new document created by File > New doesn't have any layers. It is completely empty until you add some data.

In your second screenshot above, the white rectangular area you're seeing is the canvas. As Walt pointed out, you need to add something, that is then reflected in the Layers Panel.
