Could be then system font scanning at app startup related, does ADe write an own crash report too or does it crash before doing so?

Unfortunately I started facing this issue today. None of my Affinity V1 software are working properly. All of them start fine, but don't respond at all when I try to create a new document. Also if I try to open a saved document, it just hangs and then crashes. I think the issue is related to fonts, because today I deleted a few fonts from my Fonts directory on Windows 11 Control Panel. Then I started Affinity Photo, then clicked on the change font dropdown menu and the software hanged and crashed. Now it won't open or create any document..

I've been searching for a solution all day, and nothing worked for me. Here's what I tried to do:

- Checked for new Windows updates
- Updated the Nvidia graphics card driver
- I restarted windows
- I uninstalled all Affinity software and reinstalled them
- I deleted the AppData folder
- I held control while starting Affinity are reset all settings
- I went to settings and unchecked Enable OpenCL acceleration
- I tried different renderes:r WARP, Intel UHD graphics, Nvidia..

Nothing worked  :(

Welcome to the forums @tareksobh

If you have deleted a font which the Affinity applications rely on being there then you may need to restore the default fonts and/or fix the font registry.

This video should tell you what you can do: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCCohFBBSa0

It’s also worth noting that some versions of the V1 applications had problems with the font drop-down so it’s probably best if you can upgrade to the latest version of V1 (currently 1.10.6 on Windows) first and see if that fixes things, unless you are already using the latest version of V1.

Hello GarryP! Thank you so much for your welcomes and for your reply.

This problem is seriously so weird. After restoring the default fonts from the Control Panel and running the font registry fix, I restarted and then opened Affinity Photo and it worked! I was able to create new documents and open saved ones. However, I tried adding a text box and then the software froze and crashed! Then when I opened it again, it went back to not being able to create new documents or open saved ones.

Running the font registry fix would make the software run again and open documents, but as soon as I try to do anything with texts, if just crashes.

Also, I'm running the latest V1 update (1.10.6.1665)

Given the things you have already said that you have tried, the only thing I can think of next is to get Windows to rebuild its font cache.

Instructions can be found here: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/how-to-reset-font-settings-in-windows-10/e3739be7-31e0-4dcd-aa52-2f662e1b8fcf
...and here: https://www.thewindowsclub.com/rebuild-font-cache-in-windows
...and elsewhere, just search the web for windows rebuild font cache and see which instructions look like something you feel up to trying,
...but the process is not for the ‘feint-hearted’.

Thank you so much GarryP!

It appears like I'm making progress every time you provide me with a solution. I followed the steps to rebuild the font cache and restarted the system. Affinity Photo appeared to be working completely fine. I was able to create and open documents, however, the minute I decide to add text it freezes and crashes again.

I have an Arabic language pack installed on Windows, so I also tried deleting it and then rebuild the font cache, but unfortunately that didn't solve the problem either.

I'm afraid that the only solution to this problem might be to reinstall Windows, which I can't afford to do right now.. Especially because all software that uses fonts are working completely normal, except for the three Affinity software..

Unfortunately I don’t think I can be of much extra help with this kind of problem.
If you’ve tried all of the usual stuff, and some less-than-usual stuff, then I don’t know what to advise next.

It sounds like you need someone with more Windows ‘sysadmin’ knowledge than I have.

Hopefully someone else will come along and be able to help you further.
(The solution could be something very simple which I’m just not aware of.)

Hi @tareksobh,

Quite the strange one, could you provide us with a few recent crash reports after running up the app and also a copy of your System and Application event viewer logs to see if they provide any additional insight?

Where to find crash reports:

Saving System/Application logs (.EVTX):  https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/52088.windows-10-how-to-save-a-copy-of-the-event-viewer-application-and-system-logs.aspx

Many thanks

Hello @NathanC

Thank you so much for your support! I honestly couldn't live another day without using Affinity Photo, So I decided to reset my Windows.. Luckily there was an option to keep my personal files, and only delete all software and reinstall Windows. I did that yesterday, reinstalled all Affinity software, and thankfully everything is working perfectly now.

I'll not touch my system fonts again! Thank you for your support. @GarryP & @NathanC
