Snapping cannot create present

Works here as expected in all three apps, both with the floating window and the popover window in the main toolbar.
But I already have some custom presets if that makes a difference?

Hi @zgwangbo,

I've also tested this in both 2.2.1 and 2.3 and I was able to access the snapping preset context menu without any issues, I also didn't have have any presets prior to updating, this was on an M1 running Sonoma 14.1.1.

What MacOS version are you using, and not that it should matter but are you using a standard mouse or a MacBook trackpad?

Hi @NathanC,

I installed V2.1.0, V2.2.0 and V2.3.0. The 2.1.0 version works well. But the problem happened on 2.2.0 and 2.3.0. Please see the attached images.

My MacOS version is 10.15.6, MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports), Intel Core i5.

I use the MacBook trackpad.

Thanks.

I also have some custom presets on Version 2.1.0. But when I installed the 2.2.0 and 2.3.0, it did not work. I think maybe the 2.2.0 changed something.

A preset must have a unique combination of settings. You already are using a preset named 'WB-20231125', so you will need to change some setting before the option to create a preset will become available.

I think you misunderstood me. There's no pop-up menu on Version 2.2.0 and 2.3.0 when clicking the button, but 2.1.0 has the menu.

Hi @zgwangbo,

I've since tested this on a M1 Macbook Air running Ventura 13.5.1 and using the trackpad the dialog always prompts as expected in 2.3, if possible could you try using a mouse for comparison just to confirm it's nothing odd to do with the trackpad/trackpad settings?

Failing that, could you try resetting your Snapping presets in one of the apps by doing the following:

  1. Close all affinity apps
  2. Hold down CTRL and launch the app while still holding CTRL
  3. A 'Clear user data' menu will appear, in addition to the already ticked boxes tick 'Reset snapping presets'
  4. Press 'Clear' and the app will now launch, try opening the snapping menu again

If both of the above don't work I can only think it's a problem specific to Catalina, so I'll see if I can get this tested on a Mac running Catalina.

My gut feeling is that the issue may come from running multiple versions concurrently, all attempting to load the same snapping_options.dat file which may or may not be backwards compatible between versions.

That should likely fix it, however it might reintroduce the issue if you would launch an older version again.

Hi NathanC,

Thanks for your reply. I did the following step:

1. Used mouse and then used the trackpad. It seemed no effect. Please see the video-1;

2. Closed AD2 app, and then restarted app by holding CTRL. After that, cleared the data. Please see the image;

3. Launched the app, and opened the menu. It seemed no effect. Please see the video-2.

Because this happened after I upgraded AD2 from 2.1.0 to 2.2.0, I thought it might be something happened on Catalina with 2.2.0 and 2.3.0.

When version 2.2.0 was released, I upgraded the App just like before. When using the snapping function, I found that the saving function failed. By the time 2.3.0 was released, the upgrade also had no effect. Therefore, I rolled back the app to 2.1.0.

I haven't updated to v2.3 on my Catalina Mac yet, so I'll check that out.

Alright, so I can confirm the following on MacOS Catalina, MacBook Pro 15" mid-2012:

  • v2.1.1 retail: Preset popup menu works
  • v2.2.1.2075 beta: Preset popup menu does not work

(Obviously I haven't used Affinity on Catalina for quite a while, hehe…)

Will now update retail versions to 2.3.0 and report back, but so far it appears to be a specific Catalina issue. (I don't have any Mac that can run Big Sur or Monterey.)

Yep, broken on Catalina.
It might be worth to double check any other similar "hamburger menu" instances in the UI whether they are broken as well.

Hi loukash, thanks for your testing.

It's not something we'll be able to provide a timeframe for wit regards to a fix version i'm afraid. I've updated the existing issue to reflect that it's still a problem in the latest version. This thread is tagged so if there are any further updates the Affinity Info Bot will automatically reply.
