Live project document not saving

MessyBOB

Recommended Posts

This particular document is suddenly not autosaving anymore. Every time I go back to the "live docs" dashboard, all my edits are gone. So now there is no way to save the .afpub file and the only way to "save" my work is to export it.

  • New documents in this project do not show the same problems.
  • New documents without a project do not show this problem.
  • Increasing undo limit and autosave interval does not fix problem.
  • Hard quit app does not fix the problem.

Hi @MessyBOB and welcome to the forums,

I see a message saying "Your file has errors. It was possible to open it, but you are advised to take a copy of this file and report this error." when opening your file suggesting there may be partial corruption.

I would be inclined to make a duplicate of the file and then create a new single-page A4 facing page document using the same settings and use Document > Add Pages from file to generate a new file, save it and see whether that fixes the issue you're seeing with regards being unable to save the file.

In fact, try this version and see if it fixes the issue or not...

Hi @Hangman, thx!

Thanks for your quick reply.
Ok, I only have the iPad app, so I'm assuming that's why I'm not seeing the error message or the option to add pages from file. So my work around was duplicating the file (problem remained as expected) then I opened a new document with same settings and manually copied and pasted the pages to and from. This resolved my issue!

I've never had any significant problems with AFphoto or AFdesigner on iPad since 2020. Was stoked when AFpub was released on iPad, because I thought it would improve my workflow. This was the first project I got to use it for. Unfortunately lost a half day of work and would very much like to know if I can do something to prevent this from happening again? Like, is my iPad to old or is the file to big? Is it just an inherent problem of using the iPad app and would it be way better to do this kind of work on a desktop? Or was it just bad luck?

Hi @MessyBOB,

I'm really glad you now have a working file, as for the reason you experienced this issue I suspect just bad luck. For whatever reason I think your file suffered from an element of file corruption but as to the reasons why I'm not entirely sure...

Others here may have more insight specifically related to Publisher on iPad though...

Hi @MessyBOB,

Welcome to the Affinity Forums :)

Inspecting your document, I've found the following Mask layers on Page 8 to be the cause of the error/failure to save the document correctly:

After deleting these mask layers, the error no longer appears and the document can be saved as expected.

I'm not entirely certain of the exact cause for these masks to have become corrupted, as I cannot see any issue with their usage/layer structure of your document currently - therefore I'm logging this file with our development team to be investigated further.

In the meantime, I've attached a copy of the recovered file here for you.

I'm very sorry to hear that your work was lost due to this issue, as above I cannot see any particular cause for this currently, and I certainly don't believe that you as a user did anything incorrectly, or could have avoided this issue with a different iPad etc - simply unfortunately programmatic errors can occur within documents occasionally, and it appears as though your document was a recipient of such.

I certainly would not expect this issue to occur again, but should you be able to recreate a corrupted Mask layer in a new document following a specific workflow, please do let us know and our team can investigate further :)
