develop RAW as Pixel results in .NEF file not .JPG

Recommended Posts

Hello, new to the forum so please bear with me, thanks:

Based on your request for information to start out with:

Affinity Photo version 2.1.1

Yes, I can reproduce this

this happens for all documents that I have tried it with

Description of problem:

I use a Nikon z-50 and shoot in RAW and jpg.  I have been trying to use the RAW pictures for initial processing, then convert them to jpg.  When I "develop" them using the pixel option, I am expecting to get a .jpg file.  After numerous attempts all I can get is a .nef file.

Maybe I am doing something wrong, but from videos I have seen, i don't think so.  Can someone lend me some guidance?  I am trying to learn this program on a part time basis.

Hi @TRKSKIS and welcome to the forums,

If opening your .NEF file in Affinity Photo, the RAW file will open in the Develop Persona of Photo where you can process your RAW image using the various controls available.

Once you've finished editing your RAW file you then click the blue Develop button in the top left corner of the Develop Persona. At this point, your file will still show the .NEF file extension because you've not done anything else with it.

To convert it to a JPEG file you need to export the file using File > Export which will bring up the Export dialog window where can select the file format to export your file to, e.g., JPEG, PNG, TIFF etc.,

There is no automatic conversion to JPEG once you've developed the RAW file.

Hangman, thanks for the very quick reply!!  I do have one question:

When the Develop button is selected and the output is set to Pixel, I guess I would expect a .jpg file.  What is the purpose of that mode?  As I said earlier, I'm new to this.

If you select Pixel your Raw file will be converted to a pixel layer

(Which is the same sort of layer you get when opening a JPG file)

But it still needs to be exported from the affinity document to get a JPG file

To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. If any of "my" posts are wrong or appear to be total b*ll*cks they are the ones generated by the AI. If correct they were probably mine. I apologise for any mistakes made by my AI - I'm sure it will improve with time.

When you select Pixel Layer from the dropdown the RAW image is converted to a Pixel Layer in the Photo persona. When selecting either RAW Layer (Linked) or RAW Layer (Embedded), the RAW file remains as an editable RAW file, i.e., you can double-click it in the layers panel to return to the Develop Persona to make further RAW edits, so Pixel Layer is effectively Destructive whereas both RAW Layer (Linked) and RAW Layer (Embedded) are non-destructive.

APh has different so called personas for different tasks ...

  • Develop Persona -- where RAW files opened in and are developed in
  • Photo Persona -- where you can do various pixel/bitmap image manipulations (after deveoping a RAW/NEF file you will be in this mode/persona)

In order to save any in the Develop Persona and as pixels/bitmap taken over image to the Photo Persona, you would use the Export features of the Photo Persona, in order to save an pixel/bitmap image then as let's say a JPG or PNG ... etc.

See also the online help which explains the user interface and the usage of tools, functions ... etc.
