Hello! I have Affinity V2 version for Designer and Photo. I've noticed the last couple weeks while working on a file it will force close after trying to save the document and say "cannot be saved". Now Last night I was working on some files, put my computer to "sleep" and woke up and found that three files are showing corrupted. I've been able to open other files without issue. Is there a way to recover them? I save to an external hard drive that is a Scandisk SSD. Storage isn't an issue either. I did update to the latest version of the V2 Designer and photo. Can someone please help me? Thank you!

This is one of the most often happening issues/things people do lately always report here and I wonder that Serif/Affinity doesn't make it overall more clear, that it can yield to data lost when using directly external drives like SSDs, NAS, Cloud Storage ... for I/O storage with Affinity software.

I repeat here, what I always and probably already adviced some 100 times before ...

  • As a rule of thumb, you best always only use your local drive to save/load and work with Affinity document files on and use any external storage (like SSDs, disks, NAS, Cloud Drives ...) instead just as a sort of backup and archive media. Meaning to copying/moving any Affinity files then to/from that external backup media only manually via the systems Explorer/Finder apps in order to prevent any data losts!

If you have still some copy flying around of those files and they're small ones, you can try to attach them here. - Otherwise you will have to wait until some Affinity stuff member sees your thread here and offers you maybe some link to post them to (load them up to) then for an closer files inspection and if possible rescue of contents!

As that article is from an Affinity rep I don't wonder that it doesn't tell and name possible existing problems about Affinity files in conjunction with cloud storage and file syncing between platform here. That is, things are glossed over and presented as if they always work smoothly and seamlessly together. - But as we all know and have often seen here in the forum, in reality things can look different here under certain circumstances!

From the beta 2.2.01903 info found hereclipimage.jpg.c71b3080cd3812f5655afca46cf52429.jpg

I think Serif wants us to be only creative in finding workarounds to use their tools.

I have an affinity with Jumping through hoops and Finding work-a-roundabouts, I'm getting dizzy from all that spinning before my eyes.

The question for me is what version should I use since they all seem to be unstable. Just yesterday after 5 or 6 hours of work, saving regularly, I had V1's restore/update system corrupt a large file such that it was completely lost, so the only backup I had was unfortunately 3 days old since that new file was totally lost. I've had V2 public version stall and lag on brushes so its not useable to me for work, and the beta seems to be crashing due to loading and saving and the restore file system has corrupted some of the work too. Luckily, I've saved often and I also do not have any files on any external drives anymore. Its a genuine concern when I choose to support Affinity(and love their apps) and what they are trying to do, but its literally cost me days of work.

Please Affinity continue to focus on this issue - it can be an extremely disheartening and a tense experience to use this software...
