opening app

Just bought and loaded this fantastic piece of kit, but I can only open it from an image - it won't open by double clicking the icon in the dock? Can anyone help, please?

Right-click on the Dock icon & from the menu that pops up, choose Options > Show in Finder. What folder does it show the app is in?

Make sure the application is located in the root of the Applications folder, that is, it shouldn't be neither inside another folder there, nor in another location outside the Applications folder.

If that's the case drag it to the Applications folder.

When you right click the icon in the dock and select Options ▸ Show in Finder does it open the Applications folder?

Is it possible that you may also have have a trial or a beta installed along with the Mac App Store version?

 

If not, drag the application icon to outside away from the dock to remove it, start the program from the Launchpad, then right click on the dock icon while the application is open and select Options ▸ Keep in Dock to add it again.

That helped. Almost sorted but not quite I think.

 

I hit "quit" and then relaunched from Launchpad (Its my fault I guess but regardless of where I dragged the icon it just sprang back to dock)

 

Now If I hit top left (Affinity Photo - Quit) and close it closes and then opens from the doc, but if I hit the red button far left on the dark editing screen, which operation usually closes other applications, it doesn't close - the editing screen vanishes but leaves the Affinity Photo selections open at the top of the screen. Hope this makes sense.

 

I haven't loaded and beta or trial versions to my knowledge.

Affinity apps don't immediately quit when you hit the close button (the red circle). That's by design. To quit the app you must go to menu Affinity Designer ▸ Quit or press ⌘ (cmd) + Q after closing all documents (menu File ▸ Close). This is not exclusive to Affinity apps. There's a few others that do the same like iTunes for example.

Alternatively you can right-click on the dock icon and select Quit (again if there's no documents open, otherwise you will be prompted to save them first).

The red 'close window' button works the same for all applications -- it will close whatever application window it appears on, but it will also automatically quit only a few apps, typically those designed to display a single or main window interface whenever they are open, for example the Apple Dictionary & Mac App Store apps.

 

The vast majority of apps will not quit even if you close all of their document windows, including Affinity & most Apple apps like Safari, Finder, Contacts, Preview, & many others. You can tell they are still open because until you click on something else their main menubar items (what you called the "selections open at the top of the screen") will still be visible. Clicking on another app's window will switch to its menubar items. In this respect, the desktop is considered one of Finder's windows, so clicking anywhere on the desktop where no window is visible works the same as clicking on a Finder window.

It was a little annoying at first when I bought my mac, to see that the apps didn't quit when I clicked the red traffic light. -I'm used to it now. ;)

If you hover your cursor over the dock, you can see some tiny dots under all the programs that are open.

Except that for some inexplicable reason known only to Apple, from OS X Lion version onwards, System Preferences > Dock has an option that must be checked to show the dot indicators.
