Stoffmann Posted March 31, 2023 Posted March 31, 2023 Hi, I'm sorry I have to say this, but for me Affinity Photo V2 is not ready for productive usage. V1 was working rock solid on my system, while V2 is crashing frequently out of nowhere. Unfortunately I already started some projects with V2. Is there any way to load theses files in V1 again? Best regards Stefan Quote
Staff Callum Posted March 31, 2023 Staff Posted March 31, 2023 Hi Stefan, I'm sorry to hear V2 is crashing for you this is something we can likely get to the bottom of if you tell me which operating system you are using etc. Unfortunately there is no way to convert V2 files back to V1 files. Thanks C Quote Please tag me using @ in your reply so I can be sure to respond ASAP.
Stoffmann Posted March 31, 2023 Author Posted March 31, 2023 (edited) Thanks for the offer. I'm using WIndows 10 22H2 Build 19045.2728 Hardware acceleration is enabled using an Nvidia RTX3090 with Studio drivers version 528.49 I attached my crash reports. Most of the crashes appear when I drag an asset into my project and start to drag and resize it. The more assets dragged into the project the more likely is the crash. At least thats how it look to me. If it happens, not only Affinity Photo closes, to me it looks like the whole Graphics Card gets restarted. Black screen for several seconds until it comes back. reports.zip Edited March 31, 2023 by Stoffmann Quote
Stoffmann Posted April 1, 2023 Author Posted April 1, 2023 Do the logs show any reason for the crashes? Regards Stefan Quote

No, but you can copy the content of the document from v2 and paste it in a document in version 1, or do File > New From Clipboard in version 1. You should get a faithful transfer of things that do not rely on new features of v2, but a crash of v1 could be provoked by v2 new features. Note that New From Clipboard creates a document with 96 PPI (wrongly termed DPI in Affinity), but that's easy to change with Resize Document command. Quote
ATP Posted April 1, 2023 Posted April 1, 2023 Have you tried disabling hardware acceleration? Not that this is optimal, but while Serif is working out the bug this might be useful. Quote
Stoffmann Posted April 1, 2023 Author Posted April 1, 2023 I tried, but there was no difference. Quote
ATP Posted April 1, 2023 Posted April 1, 2023 Does your GPU driver crash/reset with HW acceleration off too? Of course I don't know how Affinity 2 works under the hood, but that sounds quite interesting. Quote

Stoffmann Posted April 17, 2023 Author Posted April 17, 2023 This is really strange, because the Application detects my GPU and enables OpenCL So I wonder how the log can say GPU unknown? Also, I find it sad that there is a utility for disabling GPU support, for a program that advertises GPU support. In V1 I don't have this issues, so I will use it as long there is no better way. Which is also why there is nowadays (for V2 apps) a command line option flag to disable the OpenCL hardware acceleration settings. 1 hour ago, Stoffmann said: So I wonder how the log can say GPU unknown? Those crash DMPs are generated & written by the Affinity apps, so it's a matter of the crash detection module what it detects and writes out here. 1 hour ago, Stoffmann said: Also, I find it sad that there is a utility for disabling GPU support, for a program that advertises GPU support. That utility is a user made one, it's not from Serif, I once did that as I was borred to always read/see hundreds of Win OpenCL related crash reports in the forum just due to enabled GPU OpenCL settings. Quote Well don't blame me, I'm just an independent user who also happens to be a software developer (though in totally other IT software areas). And the story behind this little tool is pretty easy explained, as a user I was really sick & tired of always seeing again and again (repeatedly) posts related to that OpenCL hardware acceleration problematic theme in the forum. - So I said one day to myself, Ok let's do something against these problems a bunch of people seem to have with that as default enabled OpenCL hardware acceleration setting on Windows systems. And the result is this little "OpenCL Disabler" auxiliary-tool! Why Serif decided to use these OpenCL hardware acceleration settings as default? Honestly I don't know, possibly their marketing wanted it that way in order to show and advertise some speedy screen handling or the like. - However, you have to blame Serif for that decision and not me here! Quote In V1 I don't have this issues, so I will use it as long there is no better way. You won't have those problems as far as WIndows doesn't update your certain working GPU driver, a newer auto GPU driver update might change the behavior here then again, no matter if a V1 or V2 app is used. - So for Affinity apps the whole is sadly pretty OpenCL & GPU driver dependent.
