Generating PDF preview is taking ages

Recommended Posts

You're not doing anything wrong, I find it really slow, too, so I just ignore the preview and export immediately.

With my current book file it takes 2 minutes and 43 seconds to generate a pdf preview on an M1 Pro. And the preview is just of the first page which has a single text frame with six words of text. The problem is that Publisher goes through the entire document to preview it and calculate file size but shows just a preview of just one page.

Download a free manual for Publisher 2.4 from this forum - expanded 300-page PDF

My system: Affinity 2.4.2 for macOS Sonoma 14.4.1, MacBook Pro 14" (M1 Pro)

The processing could be improved so that generation of the preview of the first page of the specified range is shown as soon as possible (similarly as when only one page is selected to be exported) and the actual "prerendering" performed in the background. As preview is now always shown, users typically wait for preview to appear simply to verify that rendering is as expected, without necessarily realizing that it is not necessary to wait for the process to finish (or preview to be displayed). That a full "prerendering" is done is ok since it e.g. shows realistically the file size and whether something will be rasterized in the export.
