Maintains Object Name When Merging Objects

What are the rules for maintaining an object name when merging?  I have a current object named ‘XXXX” but when I add an additional object, the object reverts to ‘Curve’. It worked for me once, but I can’t replicate it. I’ve tried both ways - first/last selected - and neither works. Naming objects is a pain (no fault of AD) but I hate naming-renaming as I build objects. Thanks

Could you clarify which tool/operation you're using when you say you are merging/adding objects? Do you mean a Boolean Add or Edit > Merge Curves? From trying both, it appears to retain the layer name of the lower object in the stack.
