aPub: how to reference a dynamic page reference?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Please, can you help me again solving my problem with referencing pages within a document?

On one page I have the text "Solution on page 20". But I want the page number (20) be dynamic. So when I insert a new page before page 20 (lets say "page 20" becomes then "page 21", the reference text on the earlier page should read "Solution on page 21" automaticly.

This document will be used for printing on paper. So an URL or bookmark will not be possible.

I appreciate your help very much.

Chris

You can get a dynamic page number, but it's a bit complicated.

  1. Create a new pair of text frames. Link the first to the second.
  2. Size the first frame appropriately to be Pinned in-line with your normal text. In that frame, type "page " and then Text > Insert > Fields > Next Frame Page Number.
  3. In your normal text, you'll then have "Solution on " and immediately follow it with the first frame, pinned in-line.
  4. Leave the second frame you created in step 1 empty, and drag it to the text you want to link to. Pin it in-line at the front or end of that text, or replacing a blank in the text.
  5. At that point, the normal text will have "Solution on page n" where n is the page number where you've put the second frame from step 1.

Sample: cross-reference-example.afpub

All-in-all, it's easier to use a different style where you can simply use an anchor, and forget about displaying the page number in the text that's referencing it. But if you really need the number, this is the only approach I now of that will work, currently.
