I am a new, and only started using Affinity today, and was progressing well.

Had a break saved my file. I came back and opened the file. I want to use the Place command, when the directory listing shows, all the files are greyed out.

Also everything in the file I created, doesn't allow editing? The document is a Affinity Photo Document

What have I done?

Thanks

Welcome to the forums @kathekas

Can you tell us which OS you are using and which Affinity application you are using?

Can you also give us a full-screen screenshot of the Affinity application in each case? (Both ‘greyed-out files’ and ‘doesn’t allow editing’.)

Can you also tell us what sort of storage device/solution you are using? (Local hard drive, NAS, thumb drive, cloud, etc.)

If you have a Text frame selected, Place allows you to select text files, not image files.

Thanks.

If I close everything down and reopen an afpohtos file, then got to 'Place', every type of file is greyed out - just like in the photo

Anything on the drive which has a afpohtos extension is grey out !!! So frustrating.

Might be due to MacOS security settings, check if Affinity Photo is allowed to access those files. - See related:

Further in order to prevent for possible read/save data lost, don't work with APh directly with/on iCloud or USB sticks. - You better copy those over to your local disk and then access/work there then with those files. Thus overall using the iCloud or USB sticks with Affinity just as an backup media, aka copying Affinity files and related linked materia via the Finder back and forth and just work with files always on the local file system disk.

☛ Affinity Designer 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Photo 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Publisher 1.10.8 ◆ OSX El Capitan
☛ Affinity V2.3 apps ◆ MacOS Sonoma 14.2 ◆ iPad OS 17.2

Thanks for the advice
