Digitalfox Posted March 5, 2022 Posted March 5, 2022 Good morning. Affinity Publisher 1.10.4.1198 on a Windows 10 PC. I have both ARIAL and ARIAL MT font sets installed. My 'body text' style is set to use Arial which has an italic variation. As soon as I select a few words of text that I wish to italicise within a paragraph, the chosen font changes automatically to Arial MT which does not have an italic variation. The same thing happens with text which does not have a style applied. My question is: How do I italicise a few words within a paragraph set with Arial font? Thank you. Quote
Wosven Posted March 5, 2022 Posted March 5, 2022 Hi and welcome @Digitalfox Arial is a Windows font. So it should be available by default. Arial MT is an older version, probably installed by a different app, (it's not even available on Win7). Theorically (I can't do the test, not having Arial MT), you should be able to disable or best, uninstall Arial MT, and the system won't have problem, and will only use the last version of Arial shipped with Windows 10. GarryP Posted March 5, 2022 Posted March 5, 2022 I think one solution would be to use a Character Style for the words you want italicised. That Character Style can override the base Paragraph Style by setting a different font. See attached screenshot for an example. Quote
Digitalfox Posted March 5, 2022 Author Posted March 5, 2022 Hi GarryP/Wosven Not the answer to my newbie problems this time I'm afraid, but thanks to Wosven for giving me a vital clue. My problem was that "Arial"was being automatically changed to "ArialMT" (note this was not Arial MT with a space!). I checked that I was not using ArialMT (without a space) in any of my documents, then deleted it from Windows. When I next started Publisher up my problem disappeared!! Thanks to you both, Regards Digitalfox Dan C 1 Quote
kenmcd Posted March 5, 2022 Posted March 5, 2022 Arial MT was an old Type 1 font. Type 1 fonts do not work in APub, and can cause name conflicts. There are some OpenType/TrueType conversions of these fonts available out there. These fonts are badly broken - and will also cause name conflicts. So any font that appears in your font menu as Arial MT (or ArialMT) - un-install it. Note: Current versions of Arial are still embedded in PDFs as ArialMT (no space) which adds to the confusion.
