When I try to open saved Affinity Publisher files to work on them again I have trouble with this popping up. Sometimes it works to restart the computer and try again and sometimes it doesn't. As far as I'm aware we updated the program every time a new version was available. Is there something we're doing wrong? Or any way to keep this from happening? Thanks!

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums, @sisdsigns.

Are you getting that message while using 1.9.2, or while using the 1.10 beta?

There's apparently a problem with Publisher documents that have a lot of embedded (or possiby linked) files in them, where the application exceeds the allowed number of file handles and issues the wrong error message.

That's fixed in the most recent 1.10 beta versions of the appliations, and should roll out into the 1.10 retail release relatively soon.a

But I'm a bit puzzled that you seem to have posted in the Publisher Beta forum, but you say you're using 1.9.2. If you are using the beta, make sure you've updated to build .1115.

Did I post in the wrong category?....

You have posted in the part of the forums labeled "Publisher beta on Windows", as you can see in the breadcrumb trail at the top of the page (at least, if you have a wide enough browser window for them to display):

If you're not using the beta, then one of the other areas of the forums would be better. If you click on Home or Forums at the top of the page you'll get to the full index, where better choices might be "Affinity on Desktop Questions (Mac and Windows)" or "Report a Bug in Affinity Publisher".

Not sure what you mean by Beta-

The applications are available in retail releases (e.g., 1.9.2.1035) and in a beta-test form, where we can get an early preview of what is coming in the next retail release and help Serif test the applications. That is done via another section of the forums, Beta Software Forums, which you'll also find in the forum index.

But back to your problem: Do you have a lot of embedded files in your document? If so, to open it you might make sure you don't have other Publisher documents opened at the same time, to try to conserve file handles. If that doesn't help, you might check whether you have a lot of fonts installed (not just the ones supplied by Windows). If you do have a lot of fonts, possibly uninstalling some of them might help. Or, you can wait for the 1.10 release and see if your file works there. Or you could try installing the current beta (I linked to it in my prior reply) and see if it works there. The beta will install along side your retail release, but you should only use it for testing, and only on copies of your production documents.

Ok thanks!

Yes the documents do have everything embedded. Would it help to change it to linked? And we do have several fonts which we need for our project-

You might find it interesting to know that most times it helps to restart the computer...
