bykepsycho
I am brand new to using photo editing software... so keep that in mind. I have photos of myself as Darth Vader holding the grownup version of the lightsaber which lights up red, kinda. In the photos the red doesn't come through well. How do I A. select the lightsaber "beam" B. replace the color C. Make it look like it is glowing D. Make sure the changes are saved as a new picture? I've looked at several videos and I'm just not getting it, probably because what I want to do involves several steps? I've been able to select the beam with the flood select tool but then I can't do anything with the selection, or nothing I try to do works. Thanks. Madame
HI, Bykepsycho! When you have your picture open, 1.) click on the new layer icon. Paint over the saber with red with a basic soft brush. Change the blendmode to 2.) reflect 3.) Add a gaussian blur filter. Set the amount to your liking. Then you go to File, export and save it where you can find it again. ;) I borrowed the picture from google. peter and Magnus_vb 2 Quote - Affinity Photo 2.3.0 - Affinity Designer 2.3.0 -Affinity Publisher 2.3.0 MacBook Pro 16 GB MacOS Sonoma 14.1.
Staff Lee D Posted October 28, 2015 Staff Share Posted October 28, 2015 Hi bykepsycho, Welcome to the forums. Another way to get that type of effect: Open your image, on a new layer Press the “P" key to select the Pen tool. Set the line width so it matches up to the width of the blade. Click and drag to create the line. If it doesn't match up when you are drawing it, make sure the colour is white. Hit Command+"J" three times, so the layer is copied, you should have four layers plus the background. With the top layer selected, go to Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Set the Blur to the same amount as the line width, do this with all the copies, but not with the original layer. On the first layer, click the FX icon, select Outer Glow Click on the colour box, select the colour of your lightsaber, from here you can mess around with Radius and Intensity. Hope this helps Lee

bykepsycho
I can't seem to figure out how to post a photo of my attempt at a lightsaber....
bykepsycho
I've tried Lee D's method. Not exactly the look I was hoping for.... Your instructions say "If it doesn't match up when you are drawing it, make sure the colour is white." So, I've had a heck of a time figuring out how to make the saber red and glowing. I'll keep trying. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ldxa99df9ncsldh/DSC_2252.png?dl=
bykepsycho
Madame, Is there a way to fill the sword with a color automatically without having to paint manually? I'm having great difficulty painting inside the lines....
bykepsycho
Madame, I like how this turned out. https://www.dropbox.com/s/bzn2emlmiidh0tb/Carolyn%20Darth%20Glow%20Saber.jpg?dl=
Madame
Bykepsyko, that turned out well. Did you use the way I described? When you use blur and blending modes, you don't have to be so precise.. but: To make a straight and precise line: Click with your brush where the line begins, hold down shift and click where the line ends. Be sure that the brush is sized to match the with of the saber (in this case). bykepsycho 1 Quote - Affinity Photo 2.3.0 - Affinity Designer 2.3.0 -Affinity Publisher 2.3.0 MacBook Pro 16 GB MacOS Sonoma 14.1.

Staff Lee D Posted November 9, 2015 Staff Share Posted November 9, 2015 bukepsycho, I'm glad you manage to get one of the methods to work for you, there's so many that work. Here's one I did using the method I posted, I hope Mickey doesn't mind :) Madame
