ennuied
In my particular case I have a raster image with a black background, I need to make the black transparent, yes, all of the black will become transparent not just background. So how can I do this? You can make either black or white transparent in Xara.

Affinity Designer. The problem is the opacity effects have no effect on the raster image whatsoever. None of these effects do anything. iconoclast
Click on the small gear symbol at the top right of the layers panel (you can see it on your own screenshot, right of "Contrast Negate"). There you get the Blend Options. By dragging the left point of the left window down, you make black transparent. By dragging the right one of the left panel, you make white transparent. ennuied

That's way more effective than in Xara, you can actually regulate the transparency to make it non transparent, at least visibly. Really cool and incredibly time saving.
