Hi,

It would be more convenient, if the option "Aufteilen" (German) in pathfinder
would also work with open pathes.
They could be used to dissect closed objects more easily
Please look at the example above.

At the moment I have to use closed objects instead.
Please look at the example below.

Best regards
Rainer

As in: It's a bug, not a "missing feature".

MacBookAir 15": MacOS Ventura > Affinity v1, v2, v2 beta // MacBookPro 15" mid-2012: MacOS El Capitan > Affinity v1 / MacOS Catalina > Affinity v1, v2, v2 beta // iPad 8th: iPadOS 16 > Affinity v2

It is a limitation of the current Affinity apps, not a bug :)

Affinity is not alone in using algorithms that deliberately close an open path (by means of a straight line segment) when the path is used in a Boolean geometry operation.

Which reminds me… to finally set up a new SheepShaver disk image (250 MB is not enough!) so that I can also install my beloved Freehand 9 in my Mac OS 9 virtualization to make up for features Affinity is "missing" in 2021. Oh well… :/

In Illustrator, there are 2 possibilities to solve the problem.
– Formerstellungswerkzeug (maybe called "form tool" in english)
– Darunter liegende Objekte aufteilen (translated: Dissecting objects below)
to find in main menu Objekt (object) > Pfad (maybe path in english)

And the best workaround directly in Affinity so far is:

  1. select all open paths and change stroke width to 0.001 pt
(smaller values are possible but that might later add redundant nodes)
(you may need to change Preferences > User Interface > Decimal Places > Points: "3" to actually see the value, otherwise the stroke width field will display "0 pt")
  2. Layer > Expand Stroke(s)
  3. boolean Add
(optional to make the expanded strokes a single object for easy cleanup)
  4. add the closed form at the bottom to selection
  5. boolean Subtract
(optional to get rid of the strokes right away)
  6. boolean Divide
