dash lines with variable width

Recommended Posts

I would like to make dash lines with variable width along the stroke. The pressure option is not available for dash strokes, only for solid or brush strokes. I tried to set the pressure on the solid option and then switch to dash, but I do not get dashes unless I remove the pressure on the solid option. Is there a way to do dash lines with variable width? If not that would be a nice feature to add for future versions. Thank you.

No such feature as of yet, another glitch in the dashed line matrix is, the wider the stroke the longer the dash, so width dictates length. This makes it almost impossible to make a pseudo variable width line using the dashed line in the stroke panel.

There is no warp or envelope feature in Affinity Designer either else you would have been able to make a dashed line and warped it. There is however a mesh warp in Affinity Photo so you could manipulate the dashed line with that but it will rasterise the line making it no longer editable with the stroke panel.

Edited using the mesh warp tool.

Affinity Workaround #8754:

  1. start with the regular stroke and pressure to set your width variations; when finished:
  2. duplicate stroke
  3. expand one of the strokes
  4. change the other stroke to dashed at max width or more
  5. clip the dashed stroke with the previously expanded variable stroke

Actually make more copies and keep the original live, so that you can clip them all:

Another method: crop the original group with the dashed copy. All remains live and editable.
