[Photo]Is there a way to stop changing the layer when you click in the canvas?

Example screen shot 1 I am working on the player, screenshot 2 I click into the canvas to ideally select no layers, but instead it moves to the layer that is over the canvas

Is there a way to stop this?

You can lock the layer that you not want to select. You find this little lock-icon on the top right of the layers-panel. This lock don't prevent any manipulation of the pixels e.g you can paint on them or use adjustments, but you can't select them on the canvas and you can't transform them.

The simplest way to select no layers with the Move Tool is to click in the workspace somewhere outside the canvas (like in the grey area in the screenshot).
